So why is NASA involved in this whole spying thing?

9. Bush said it himself in his speech today.
He said that he authorized NASA to do these wiretaps. Heard it with my own ears.

Sadly, the poor bastard probably doesn't realize that NSA and NASA are two different entities.

7. Didn't he mean NSA? He prolly mispronounces NASA "nassau"
like he mispronounces so many words, and thinks NSA is pronounced NASA. OR....NASA is spying on us! (of course NASA has always been a gov't spy tool and money laundering tool, not science)

8. Your telephone goes through satellites and the NSA depends
on NASA/USAF launched satellites placed along the "line of sight" to intercept the microwave signals. Did you think NASA was only for peaceful, scientific exploration?

15. NASA military projects are a HUGE black box.
The US wouldn't spend 1/3 of the money it does on "civilian" uses if the development of technology didn't facilitate military applications.

Got GPS in your car? Well it's origin is in targeting control of ballistic missiles.

17. NASA launches satellites but only owns 2 that I know of.
And those two are in geosynchronous orbit, which would render them useless as spy satellites.

In answer to your question...Yes, NASA is only for peaceful scientific exploration, to the best of my knowledge.

21. It's possible that some NASA R&D spills over into DoD projects.
Edited on Mon Dec-19-05 12:32 PM by XNASA
But NASA isn't in the spy business. Other agencies are much better equipped to handle things like that. NASA is heavily dependent on contractors for R&D, so why wouldn't the DoD go directly to those contractors?

Are you suggesting that NASA is developing some kind of Death Ray?

23. No, just that everything developed is co-opted and weaponized.
Just about EVERYTHING mankind ever develops is exploited by the military, or at least those folks try to figure out How can we use this for war?. NASA just does it much more knowingly than the average joe or jane who's inventing something for peaceful use. And I'm 100% convinced that alot of money is funneled into black programs (thus they cut corners and oops the shuttles blow up now and again).

Edited on Mon Dec-19-05 03:11 PM by HereSince1628
I'm not suggesting NASA is interested in developing weapons, and I am not saying every NASA employee would have contact with projects that serve the US military.

mirrors in space for example.

Folks wonder why NASA ordered two mirrors to be built -

and then they wonder why the large crate for the second unused mirror is under guard.

The obvious answer is that there is no second mirror in that "spare" crate.

It was launched as a spy Sat long ago.

NASA also launches as NSA requests any spy Sat. Indeed all you get from NSA or NASA about such a launch is that a classified Sat was launched.

Now you do not expect Bush to keep NSA and NASA and what they do clear in his mind, now do you?

Where is that damn transmitter??? - and no photo's from behind guys, heh, heh, heh!

:-)

26. Transcript only says NSA. Goofball misspoke (Freudian, tho?)
Here's the part where he actually said NASA:

"And we're guarding the civil liberties by monitoring the program on a regular basis, by having the folks at NSA, the legal team, as well as the inspector general, monitor the program, and we're briefing Congress. This is a part of our effort to protect the American people. The American people expect us to protect them and protect their civil liberties. I'm going to do that. That's my job, and I'm going to continue doing my job."
