Dean supporters - Judicial Watch goes on the attack against your guy!
Edited on Mon Oct-20-03 06:46 PM by Democat
Why is Judicial Watch still a non-profit organization where contributions are tax deductible?

Maybe the Dean Army needs to find a way to have Judicial Watch stripped of their tax exempt status? Klayman is running as a Republican - how can they possibly claim to be non-partisan?

If they were a left wing political organization that was tax exempt, the right wing would have had them stripped of tax status long ago. Are People For The American Way tax exempt? No, because the government says they are partisan. Why is Judicial Watch allowed to be called "non-partisan"?

Is it time for our side to start fighting or not?

DEAN’S “AMBITION” CITED AS REASON FOR GUBERNATORIAL RECORDS SEAL

Dean’s Seal Request Termed “Extreme” By Vermont Deputy Secretary of State

(Washington, DC) Judicial Watch, the public interest group that investigates and prosecutes government corruption and abuse, said today that Vermont State archivist documents concerning the negotiations and decision to seal former Vermont Governor and Democratic Presidential candidate Howard Dean’s records show Dean’s personal political ambitions for the presidency were the reason Dean wanted his gubernatorial records sealed for an unprecedented 24 years. Ultimately, they were sealed for 10 years. Vermont State Archivist Gregory Sanford specifically cited “ambition” as not being sufficient grounds for exempting records from disclosure. Vermont Deputy Secretary of State William A. Dalton stated in a September 4, 2002 e-mail that, with respect to Dean’s request, “. . . even eight years seems extreme.”

Judicial Watch is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Contributions are received from individuals, foundations, and corporations and are tax-deductible to the extent allowable by law.

2. But why does the left allow them to get away with it?
If Judicial Watch was a left wing organization, the right wing would have had them stripped of their tax status years ago.

Why does the left roll over when the right would fight?

3. Larry Klayman is a lawsuit junkie
He sues over some pretty trivial things. He did file a suit against Cheney to release the Energy Task Force documents. Not much came of that I am sorry to say.

As person who believes in a transparent government, I wonder why Dean went to court to have his gubernatorial records sealed.

5. Many gov's seal their records, the issue is quite boring actually..
http://publicbroadcasting.net/vpr/news/news.newsmain?action=article&ARTICLE_ID=441887

"Well, there are future political considerations. We didn't want anything embarrassing appearing in the papers at a critical time in any future endeavor." ~ Howard Dean said jokingly.

However sealing records is nothing unusual,

"With our limited experience with executive privilege records, there doesn't appear to be anything that is of embarrassment, if that is a criteria. My understanding in negotiating with several recent administrations now, is that it's a desire protect the decision making process, the free flow of ideas within an administration."

9. Larry Klayman would sue his own mom
and he actually did. See below:

<snip>

Adversaries have described Larry Klayman as the sort of guy who would sue his mother. Turns out, he's the kind of guy who would sue his mother and take the case to trial.

The chairman of Judicial Watch, a crusading conservative with a yen for hardball and a knack for peppering Clintonites with litigation, now has Mom in his sights. Barring a last-minute settlement, Klayman's lawsuit against the seventysomething lady who brought him into this world goes to trial today in D.C. Superior Court.

7. To prevent cherry picking
Dean had the records sealed to prevent cherry picking by Rove. He did not want to be Willie Hortoned.

There is no way that anyone with a record as long as Dean's hasn't written a thing or two in the past, which when taken completely out of context, would be embarrasing or unfortunate.

There is no doubt that the repugs will investigate any Dem candidate at length (think Clinton here) to find ammo for the fall campaign.

What he signed into law, wrote, or spoke publicly remain in the public domain for inspection and comment.

14. It's long overdue for activists to sue Krazy Larry
... for abusing the litigation process. A couple good lawyers and well-written claims (and counterclaims to Judicial Wretch lawsuits) could do the trick quite nicely.
