My idea to promote World Peace
This may sound crazy; but what about heads of State getting together once a year at the U.N. for a chess tournament? Let me explain.

Chess is the only game I know of invented with a purpose in mind. It was invented by a General to teach the Art of war. General. Amateurs think in terms of tactics; generals logistics. Laymen regard war as Glorious; Generals know it is Hell. So couldn't chess be used to prevent war?

One thing that is different off the board is the fact any pawn can choose to become an assassin. But there are valuable lessons to be learned.

It's all there. One mistake on a chess board can cost you the whole war. Maybe it would help them think twice next time they feel "they" are so superior. Ordinary folks making mistakes and seeing the consequences. When asked about his mistakes; Bush coulda said something like "I gave my queen to PUTIN!!!"

Whaddaya think???

Best Regards, Donny

I am used to a different notation and I don't know what head of State you are but what the hey. If I have it right we have both advanced our King pawns.

What's the fun in that? They get to do it everyday with actual live people.

I'm an A-player myself. But the Soviets played a lot of chess, and it didn't keep them from rolling into Afghanistan.

32. Russians are good at chess but they didn't read Sun Tzu
Russians with IQs above 120 are raised on chess, and the mentality that goes with that game is the most highly prized in that culture. It's the highest form of competition in Russian culture. It's the way Russians prove they're not going senile and soft-minded, but it is a huge leap from the cerebral game of chess to the the realities of waging war.

"The principle on which to manage an army is to set up one standard of courage which all must reach." - Sun Tzu

33. Moammar Kadafi's idea
Edited on Tue Dec-20-05 12:01 AM by journalist3072
Moammar Kadafi had an interesting idea like either earlier this year, or last year.

He proposed a group of three "wise men" to help solve the world's problems.

He said the group should consist of President Clinton, President Nelson Mandela, and President Mickail Gorbachav (sp?).

He said they should form a tag team of sorts, to help solve the world's problems.

I was always intrigued by that idea. I was trying to find the original article about it, b/c I thought I emailed the article to myself...I'll have to find it later and post here on DU.

Libya says 'wise man' Bill Clinton should resolve world's wars

Wed Sep 29, 6:45 PM ET

UNITED NATIONS (AFP) - Libya offered some colourful ideas for reforming the United Nations (news - web sites), including moving the General Assembly to Geneva and letting Bill Clinton (news - web sites) resolve the world's conflicts and wars.

Libyan leader Moamer Kadhafi, never shy about putting forward visionary proposals, also wants his nation to have a permanent seat on the UN Security Council, Libyan Foreign Minister Abdurrahman Mohamed Shalghem said.

"The past 59 years have proven that the General Assembly is merely a decorative body without a soul," Shalghem said as Libya took the podium at the annual United Nations debate of world leaders which concludes this week.

He said key powers invested in the 15-nation Security Council, such as the legal authority for military action, should be transferred to the assembly, which groups all 191 UN member states.

"If this cannot be accomplished, we have no choice but to abandon the General Assembly and stop infusing money into this dead body," Shalghem said.

He also said Kadhafi wanted to see next year's session, on the 60th anniversary of the UN's founding, held in Geneva instead of at the UN headquarters in New York so that "all world leaders" can attend.

The implication was that Kadhafi would not want to visit the United States, a frequent sparring partner of his regime in Tripoli.

Kadhafi also wants the establishment of a "committee of wise men" to settle the world's conflicts and called on the United Nations to pass a resolution in support of his idea, Shalghem said.

The committee would be comprised of three former presidents -- Clinton of the United States, Mikhail Gorbachev of the now-defunct Soviet Union and Nelson Mandela from South Africa.

All world leaders approve of the proposal, Shalghem said.

He added that Kadhafi's future ideas would be posted on the Libyan leader's website, www.algathafi.org.

The site offers suggestions for solving some of the world's thorniest conflicts, including the creation of a unified state of Israel and Palestine to be called "Isratine."

Good point about afghanistan too. But what if heads of state played each other; with national prestige on the line? I think I might have something here...

If I really cared about my # of posts I guess "forum chess" would be a great idea... LOL
