The SOB is going to get away with it, isn't he?
Edited on Mon Dec-19-05 10:32 PM by Jersey Devil
I watched NBC News tonight and the domestic spying case was presented as though there is some legitimate legal argument and debate about Bush's supposed authority to conduct warrantless wiretaps. No rebuttal to the ridiculous claims that it is sanctioned by the constitution or the war resolution or some "inherent" power of the President. No calls for the President to disclose the scope of what was done.

I am very pessimistic that anything at all will come of it.

21. I agree.
And the Repugs have painted themselves into a corner with their bogus impeachment of Clinton. After all, it was "rule of law, rule of law, rule of law."

This is unmistakably, undisputedly, unabashedly a violation of the rule of law.

38. I agree with you. This one is too obviously criminal, and it's just
too costly to let it go, even if they want to. This is a president announcing that he's not only above the law, but that the Legislative Branch is irrelevant. If they let it go, they'll prove him right.

9. Take heart JD
This is just beginning to grow legs. What is not known yet, but will be revealed in short order is that the spying was not on suspected terrorists but people Bushco deemed to be political enemies. This is the smoking gun! This is what got Nixon impeached. By the way, John Dean, former White House Counsel to Nixon, says that this spy issue is an impeachable offense. And he should know.

He only wins if people keep saying things like "The SOB is going to get away with it, isn't he?". I for one refuse to say such a thing. He will NOT get away with it. He IS going to be impeached, and he IS going to stand charged with crimes against our country. He's a traitor, a thief, and a murderer, and he WILL be brought to justice.

Pessimism is defeatism. I won't have any part of it.

20. Calm down, and read the 'disclaimer':
"... presented as though there is some legitimate legal argument and debate about Bush's supposed authority ..."

And therein lies, as they say, 'the catch'. We've been hearing from Repugs for the last forty-eight hours about this alleged 'legitimate legal argument'. And yet, Bush knew as of his December 6 meeting with the NYT powers-that-be that the story was going to print.

And all of the king's horses and all of his men STILL HAVEN'T come up with the 'law' that allowed Bush to do what he did.

If they haven't discovered a legal loophole by now, it means one doesn't exist.

And by the way, NBC News? Aren't they one of the networks (along with all of the other MSM networks) that have totally ignored every anti-Bush story for the last five years?

I think some really ugly stuff is going to come out about exactly who was being spied on - whoever the sources for the story are, are still out there & probably have little to lose at this point. Everything at NSA is compartmentalized so I'm assuming that whoever leaked this - if it came from NSA - is pretty high up & aware of the larger picture...and the larger picture will emerge. The cat is half out of the bag...

46. Remember this?

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/blog/2005/09/20/BL2005092000753.html
wrote about David H. Safavian, 38, a White House procurement official "the man who up until Friday was overseeing contracting policy for the multi-billion dollar relief effort has now been charged with lying and obstructing a criminal investigation." And further on in the article quoting from a NY Times piece is this little gem "His wife, Jennifer Safavian, is chief counsel for oversight and investigations on the House Government Reform Committee, which is responsible for overseeing government procurement and is, among other things, expected to conduct the Congressional investigation into missteps after Hurricane Katrina."

I wouldn't be so optimistic...

"I watched NBC News tonight and <...>"

watched them use their first amendment right (provided that they weren't, for example, defaming anyone or inciting a riot) to say what they wanted to say and omit saying what they didn't want to say.

Note: NBC News could require all its employees to wear hallowe'en costumes during all broadcasts. If you don't like it, don't watch it. It has no official authority.

47. the press can only report what actually happens
when the Senate holds hearings on this, then we will get better coverage of the issues.. At this point the whores are stuck with "go george" and the rest are stuck with "whaaaaahhh????"

this will unfold, quickly, and we must let our views be known to our representatives and to the media to get them out of their stuck place and into the arena of true justice.

This is NEW territory to most--it is VERY IMPORTANT to not be silent so the press don't have to make it up on their own. NOW is the time to SPEAK OUT! Especially if you are pessimistic. When we go down, at least you can say to yourself "I tried--I spoke out.I didn't surrender and let it happen without protesting." If we wind up in Guantanamo that will comfort you. And if you scream loud enough maybe BUSH will go to Gitmo.

That might be the only comfort we wind up with, so go for it! NOW is the time!

NGU! (never give up)
