I was typing out a response to one of the impeachment threads tonight, and I went to type in George as my usual reference to you-know-who. I've called him "bu$h" and lots of other things over the years, but when Cindy Sheehan started calling him "George" I picked up on it. No title, no deferential terms, no artificial-folksiness of "W." Just the name his mama gave him on that awful day when he was born.
So, maybe my fingers would't go where my brain was telling them, and I typed in Geogre. Transposing two letters. No big deal. But since I'm a stickler for those kinds of things, I went back to change it. And then I thought about it. An Ogre is a reprehensible creature. And a lot of the terms applied to him don't really get across that level of contempt, or if they do they include profanity or crudity (this coming from someone with "chimp" in their user name).
Anyway, unless you read it carefully (which far too many Americans don't seem to be capable of) you wouldn't even notice this. Or, even if you did, there's a plausible degree of "Whoops, my mistake!" involved. Hyphenating it (Ge-ogre) would make it obvious, and I'd rather put the onus on others to pick up on it. If they can.
So, from here on out, I will proudly reference President Geogre Bush in my posts.
God Bless America. Maybe she'll come back to us someday.
