If you post on DU, you were probably spied on
If you donated money to PETA, you were probably spied on.

If you donated money to the ACLU, you were probably spied on.

If you donated money to any liberal cause, you were probably spied.

If you fall into multiple categories, you were more than probably spied on.

This comes down to one thing and one thing only. for the past four years, George W. Bush has waged a WAR ON FREEDOM!

DOWN WITH KING GEORGE!!!!!

Did anyone really believe the NSA ignored domestic communications? I didn't.

24. Even better

use PGP (and other encryption methods) for EVERYTHING. important or mundane.

The "wire tap" issue is so 20th century. I assume that OBL and the rest of the terrorist world have already
quit using phones... except for one use throw aways acquired by completely unrelated groups... and have moved to
encrypted IP phones and text messaging. Encrypted and encoded.

or have you got some information?

Explain how we could be spied on for posting on DU. I'm clueless as to the technology involved.

13. do you know how easy it is to find out who you are from internet postings?
Edited on Tue Dec-20-05 09:11 AM by Walt Starr
Your IP address is easy to get from your posting and that's all that is necessary to find out exactly who you are!

We know they spied on Peta.

We know they spied on the ACLU.

We know they spied on anti-war groups, and DU was one of the first and has been consistently anti-war since long before it began.

26. No, I don't
and that's what I'm asking.

Just how can a person get my IP from my posts? I know I'm techno neophyte on this kind of stuff.

30. every-time you post your IP is transmitted and recorded in clear text
which is easy for anyone with the right access (i.e. hackers, but especially the feds) to read and then trace.

20. Everyone who posts on the internet MUST have an IP (think ID) address
which is tied to either your computer (or your ISP's computer) and is transmitted to and recorded by every site you visit online which allows folks with the means to not only track you but know who you are by not only your personal information you type but also by your behavior online.

peace

28. So DU could trace me
but could an outside source?

Now, personally I don't try to be too private, I have my town in my username and often give strong clues to who I am, including pix. I understand that someone could easily find me if I, for example, threatened violent behavior towards anyone.

But would DU have to give up its data to get the IPs? That's where I'm confused.

32. as well as Hackers and especially the feds
one thing you can do to make it more difficult is by using anonymous surfing tools (try google) but if they are in your computer already with a keystroke hack you are essentially an open book to them.

the computer network is really a police state's wet dream though it is a double edged sword for sure.

gl :hi:

peace

12. I don't even think that is that narrowly defined.
Bush and the NSA hacked in to satellites and had access to all calls going through the satellites.

My bet is that they used computers to watch for keywords or keyphrases. Mention terrorist and your call is recorded. Make two calls that mention terrorists and...

Our survellience capabilities are very advanced.

18. Most electronic transactions/communications can be easily tracked
Project Echelon and other similar programs intercept information flowing daily across the internet.

Usually, if they are out to watch you, they would have somebody on the ground in or around your life. They need an infiltrator to tell them exactly what to look for and when to look for it. They can tell the people who run the machinery the names and addresses of people to monitor. If you are an active member of an anti-war group or an environmentalist group or any such group with a record of challenging authority and the government knows your group, it is easy for them to watch you by following your paper trail.

The fact is if you want to be difficult to track by the authorities, you pretty much have to live "off the grid" entirely. No internet, no phone, no bank account, no mortgage or bills of any kind. Nothing that could leave a record behind. Cash, not credit. Of course, this means accepting a far lower standard of living than most are willing to tolerate, so the next course of action would be to turn around and try to neuter state power rather than hide from that power.

19. Good. The more time they waste on incredibly dull people
like me, the less they'll have to make mischief against people who are young and healthy enough to go out and DO something.

Bring on the spies! Let them sit for HOURS waiting for my phone to ring, then hang on every word from a computerized telemarketer pitch.

Idiots.

22. Our Family knows we all were....
Our Dear Aunt Faith went to Iraq as a Human Shield (pre-war) to help protect woman and children.
She is being sued by Bushco. Our phones for months (until shortly after her return) were clicking like W's boots at a Ho Down! Shitty technology. We all answered our phones "F* Bush how can we help you."
We need a petition to Congress demanding that all persons who were wiretapped receive a letter of explanation.
That is, after all how it done "legally"
Ok, there's the Black helicopters again HEHEHEHEHE.

but, I also assume they must be bored or disinterested in me because I've been railing against them for years without so much as a peep from any authority. Who cares, outside of the natural inclination for you to wish they were actually our catching terrorists instead of watching peaceniks?

31. Oh yeah, I've probably been spied on, not that they saw much
But indeed, every single protest I've been to in my life, starting when I was nine, there have always been those hard looking men in dark glasses with state of the art cameras and/or video equipment busily taking pictures. I've been tempted more than once to file an FOIA suit in order to get these pictures, just so I can have a complete record of my life as an anti-war activist. It would be kind of fun!
