Civil liberties don’t matter much ‘after you’re dead,’ Cornyn says on spy case

Senators launched new salvos in the battle over national security and civil liberties yesterday as recent revelations of domestic spying continued to color the chamber’s stalemate on an extension of the anti-terrorism law known as the Patriot Act.
“None of your civil liberties matter much after you’re dead,” said Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas), a former judge and close ally of the president who sits on the Judiciary Committee.

Sen. Russ Feingold (D-Wis.), who has led a bipartisan filibuster against a reauthorization of the Patriot Act, quoted Patrick Henry, an icon of the American Revolution, in response: “Give me liberty or give me death.”

He called Cornyn’s comments “a retreat from who we are and who we should be.”

is Ron Paul, and he was a Libertarian before he was a Rethuglican. He has been all over this, voted against the war, etc. He is not Bush's* friend.

8. They've never mattered to John Cornyn under any circumstances
As Attorney General of Texas while Bush was governor, he has a long history of excusing Bush's many, many, many clearly criminal actions. And the people I know who used to work for him in Texas say he's personally a disgusting person, too.

Fiengold's comments are spot on, but a better reply would have been punching Cornyn in the mouth and calling him a piece of shit. You know, elevate the discussion to the Republican level.

I mean, now that all the other reasons Bush gave for invading have been shown to be lies, the Repubs have clung to the liberation excuse. It was called "Operation Iraqi Freedom," wasn't it? So, we slaughtered 120K innocent humans in Iraq, and Cornyn says thats a good thing because death is better than living in oppression under Hussein, but now that Bush is shown to be an oppressor like Hussein, he's claiming that slavery is better than death?

I guess I'm just not smart enough to follow the logic of these Republicans.

So all those thousands of people, including our dead troops, died for nothing after all? And here George Bush keeps justifying their deaths (didn't he say he'd kill them all again just to bring all this freedom and civil liberties to Iraq, recently?) by claiming they have died for a noble cause!

We must THANK Sen. Cornyn (who I hope will soon be indicted for corruption in the Abramoff affairs) for delivering the latest Rightwing talking point so eloquently and for totally debunking the Bush administration most recent reasons for the Iraq invasion.

Get those troops out of there NOW!! Murtha is right and Sen. Cornyn agrees, 'all those civil liberties don't matter much if you're dead' after all. Isn't that what we've been trying to tell them?

civil rights like not being killed because a bunch of people are so damn afraid of everyone, allowed the death of a man who wanted off the plane. i dont care the confusion. listening to the many people that said, even if man did not say bomb and the marshals lied, they perceived bomb. fuck the mans civil rights to live. shoot him. i am afraid.

let it be known. when a person of authority points a gun on you he has the backing of our society to shoot and kill. all had better hope that gun does not get pointed at you. you know your life is highly at risk. you dont have the right to live

so this man is well aware, rights really dont matter once you are dead. nothing really does. how expendable we all are because we are afraid. we have set precedence that fear and cowardliness will set policy. and that means, allow bush to do whatever to keep us safe, and safe from ourselves,.... that gun will be pointed at a lot of us, i am afraid.

Then a special "Enabling Act" (sounds like "Patriot Act") was passed, which laid the legal foundations for the national-socialist rule of Hitler. There is only a small step to cancelling elections and detaining all sorts of "threats." Of course, U.S.A. fascism would be high-tech, and the torture would be more sanitary and de-personalized in order to protect the conscience of the torturers. Every citizen must make a decision what they will if and when real fascism comes.

The flag-waving, I-support-the-troops, USA!-USA!-USA!-shouting, Limbaugh-listening, church-going, good-patriotic-citizens will be the first to come to the aid of the neo-fascists that want to turn this republic into a police state that will make Stalin's USSR look like a minor inconvenience.

They will denounce their friends, neighbors and family to the State, they will willingly give over their children for indoctrination, they will give up their freedoms one by one to buy a little more perceived security, and they will do it all with a smile and a wave to our Benevolent Leader who, of course, has our best interests at heart...perhaps they will even rebuild the camps and the ovens.

And they will honestly believe they are serving God and the best interests of the nation. :wow:
