5. That is likely the reason they had to do it in secret
FISA granted them plenty of leeway to do virtually instant wiretaps on legitimate targets. They'd probably have a tougher time getting a legal warrant to wiretap Howard Dean or Nancy Pilosi, so they used this bullshit NSA directive.

These guys are going to make Nixon look like a boy scout. Remember what they did at the U.N.? They wiretapped the phones there.

I know that's only scratching the surface.
