June 1997 - The Project for a New American Century (PNAC) was born. Populated by influential Movers of industry and Shakers of public opinion, the PNAC is an organization united in the vision for a global U.S. empire - "Pax Americana" - through coercion and military domination. Their philosophy can be simply summarized:

JANUARY 1998 - The PNAC knew that he who owns the oil also owns the world so they sent a letter to President Clinton urging him to attack Iraq and remove Saddam Hussein from power since he put "a significant portion of the world's supply of oil at hazard". Clinton didn't grant them their wish and the PNAC was disheartened that they couldn't manipulate the military while outside of the White House power structure.

Assured that the White House would soon be theirs, the PNAC debuted their 76-page blueprint to achieve world domination. What is particularly foreboding and chilling in view of events to later unfold, is this statement bemoaning the lengthy process of rebuilding the existing U.S. military according to the heightened standards and specifications the PNAC aspired to.

NOVEMBER 2000 - Saddam may have sensed an ill wind in the air when he made the first strike, turned his back on the U.S. Dollar and accepted only Euros as payment for his oil. This had the potential of seriously destabilizing the U.S. economy and the PNAC considered this an hostile act of aggression towards their personal and business interests. The heat was on for them to make their first move.

DECEMBER 2000 - In a highly contentious Presidential vote battle on the home turf of PNAC-Jeb Bush, the Supreme Court decided that George Bush was the new President.

Bush now had the green light to seamlessly merge members of the PNAC into his Administration with no one the wiser. PNAC members elevated to the Bush hierarchy include, among others:

Wasting no time, Cheney secretly assembled an advisory panel of oil and gas executives from Enron, Dynergy, Shell Oil, Chevron/Texaco and British Petroleum under the direction of James Baker (former Secretary of State under George Bush Sr.) to help shape our national energy policy and justify the PNAC's anticipated war with Iraq.

Contributing substantially to the task force discussions and recommendations was a shadowy group of unidentified observers who still remain unknown. It can be argued that the spoils of war were being doled out two years before Iraq once again became a household word. Perhaps this explains why Cheney worked so hard and so long to keep this information suppressed until Iraq was under U.S. military control...by then it would be too late for the public to object to the invasion.

Not by coincidence, the United States Agency for International Development (USAid) began coordinating infrastructure and engineering contracts to rebuild post-war Iraq. Halliburton, where Cheney formerly served as chief executive, acquired the contract to oversee firefighting operations at Iraqi oilfields.

Iraq, circa March 2001, painted a completely different picture than the Evil Empire the Bush Administrations tried to portray in their determined rush to war.

The issue of trade sanctions against Iraq put the Bush Administration in a bind - the sanctions had been designed to punish Saddam for not conceding to U.S. demands but it ended up handicapping U.S. corporations and undermining the PNAC's drive for U.S. economic supremacy. The Bush Administration was on a tight four year schedule to oust Saddam and launch the PNAC's Grand Plan for World Domination but they still didn't have a viable script to sell to the public. Yet.

The Office of Special Plans (OSP) was a secret group of analysts and policy advisors with no status in the intelligence community. Nevertheless they reported directly to the White House and National Security office with cherry-picked intelligence from questionable sources to support the case for invading Iraq. The OSP circumvented formal, well-established oversight procedures, ignored intelligence that didn't further their agenda, expanded the intelligence on weapons beyond what was justified and over-emphasized the national security risk. They became more influential than the C.I.A. or the Defense Intelligence Agency who didn't even know the ultra-secret OSP existed for at least a year.

Because they were based in the Pentagon, it was assumed that the OSP was an intelligence-gathering agency that was second-guessing the C.I.A. but in actuality it was the White House Military Marketing Machine charged with the task of writing the PNAC's "Get Saddam" sales pitch for the public. Shading and bending reality to suit their own purpose, it wasn't important for the OSP's stories about Saddam to be factual, only that the average American believed them to be - in true Hollywood fashion.

a short note about the philosophical underpinnings of PNAC:

several PNAC adherents, for example Wolfowitz, were students at the University of Chicago and were strongly influenced by the philosophy of Leo Strauss, a German Jewish emigre who escaped the Nazis in 1938 and taught there after the war. (A side note is that UChi was established by David Rockfeller at the end of the 1800's using his oil money, at a time when exalted captains of industry were not yet viewed with suspicion.) The experience of the Holocaust, including his own loss of many family members, strongly influenced the formation of Strauss' personal philosophical direction, so that he combined his original classicist (Platonian ? Sorry, I'm iggerant of the classic philosophical schools here) training involving the Athenian notion of a superior (because more supportive and generative of more culturally and ethically evolved human beings) society with a here-and-now observation that a society which is superior to others has an obligation to ensure that its culture not only survive, but replace other comparatively deficient ones. This obligation implies that such a leadership grouping has the right to use whatever means necessary, including those traditionally frowned upon and ascribed to the deficient opposition such as lying and other subterfuge, in order to ensure the higher culture's success. Further, that the optimal structural organization for such a society is that a leadership elite operate in secret and keep its mass public ignorant of its activities; it acts in their interest, shaping the culture as patricians for their own good.

The PNAC adherents have taken this and updated it to answer the question of how America should position itself in the 21st century with its advantages (last superpower, rich, democratic, "free")and limitations (5% of world pop, resource overconsumer, high defence costs, neutered but recalcitrant political opposition, etc.). We can see the parallels between the administration's proclamations that whatever they do is OK, and the Straussian notion that anything goes in defence of a culture we "know" is "better".

Disclaim: this is my own summation of information I've gathered from publicly available sources online and in other media. I believe it is an accurate representation of facts and espoused positions. Note that the New Yorker magazine's archive of articles on Iraq is a truly extraordinary information resource for this issue; they are doing a service to the nation with their reportage and information presentation. Web searching on "Leo Strauss Chicago" or similar strings will bring forth a wealth of information as well.

Rooting around on Google I’m blown away to discover that he was the father of the DLC, that Wolfowitz, Perle and Gaffney come from his office and that Rumsfeld, Perle, Wolfowitz, Abramowitz, Carlucci were part of the Balkan Action Committee which brought us the war against Yugoslavia just because the Caspian region has the world's largest untapped oil reserves. These bastards have been fucking up the world in the pursuit of oil for a long time!

The PNAC and DLC share the same origin

Current PNAC members were proteges of Henry ('Scoop”) Jackson and Daniel Patrick (“Pat”) Moynihan


“…look at the 1970s, when the neo-conservatives in the Democratic Party grouped themselves into the Coalition for a Democratic Majority (CDM). The CDM's two leading lights in Congress were the Democratic Senators Henry "Scoop" Jackson and Patrick Moynihan. The Cold Warrior and fanatically pro-Israel Jackson remains the model for the DLC crowd today. The DLC's former President, Sen. Joe Lieberman declares he is proud to be identified as a " 'Scoop' Jackson Democrat." It was these two Senators' offices that housed the Leo Straussian "Children of Satan" behind the no-exit Iraq War.

From Jackson's staff came:

* Paul Wolfowitz, now Deputy Secretary of Defense and a leading
Straussian chicken-hawk;

* Richard Perle (on Jackson's staff from 1969 until going into
the Defense Department in 1981), and until his recent forced
resignation, chairman of Rumsfeld's Defense Policy Board. It
is reported that Perle maintains Democratic Party membership
to this day, out of fealty to Scoop. Perle later brought along
Doug Feith, now Rumsfeld's Undersecretary for Policy, who has
been a Perle "groupie" since the late 1970s, largely due to
Feith's family background deep in the terrorist movement
founded by Zionist fascist Vladimir Jabotinsky. In the 1980s,
Feith financed Perle through the International Advisers Inc.,
a firm in which Feith was the only stockholder;

* Frank Gaffney, who heads the Center for Security Policy, a
"private" neo-con group which cheerleads for imperial wars and
brutally anti-Palestinian policies;

From Moynihan's office came:

* Elliott Abrams, an Iran/Contra convict who now tries to shape
Administration Middle East policy from the National Security
Council staff;

* Abram Shulsky, who heads the Office of Special Plans under
Feith in the Pentagon, which concocted fraudulent intelligence
estimates used by the Administration to justify the Iraq War;

* Gary Schmitt, the head of the empire-promoting Project for a
New American Century and a close collaborator of Shulsky.
Schmitt worked under Roy Godson of the National Strategy
Information Center in the early 1980s. Anti-LaRouche operative
Godson was active in the CDM in the 1970s, narrowly escaped
prosecution in the Iran-Contra scandals of the 1980s, and now
is a consultant to Feith and Shulsky's Office of Special
Plans.
