CNN Mentions the "I" Word (Its the Cafferty ? of the Day!!!)
Edited on Tue Dec-20-05 04:15 PM by kpete
Wolf brings up this, says it is becoming HUGE issue!!!

Bush Then
Bush: Wiretaps “Require a Court Order.” “Now, by the way, any time you hear the United States government talking about wiretap, it requires -- a wiretap requires a court order. Nothing has changed, by the way. When we're talking about chasing down terrorists, we're talking about getting a court order before we do so. It's important for our fellow citizens to understand, when you think Patriot Act, constitutional guarantees are in place when it comes to doing what is necessary to protect our homeland, because we value the Constitution.”
http://www.whitehouse.gov/news/releases/2004/04/20040420-2.html#

Bush Yesterday
Bush: I Authorized Secret Wiretap Program Without Going Through the Courts. “To save American lives, we must be able to act fast and to detect these conversations so we can prevent new attacks. So, consistent with U.S. law and the Constitution, I authorized the interception of international communications of people with known links to al Qaeda and related terrorist organizations. … This program has targeted those with known links to al Qaeda. I've reauthorized this program more than 30 times since the September the 11th attacks, and I intend to do so for so long as our nation is -- for so long as the nation faces the continuing threat of an enemy that wants to kill American citizens.” http://www.whitehouse.gov/news/releases/2005/12/20051219-2.html

4. What could even be a heavier chian around the GOP's neck in 06?
President Cheney and freshly banished Dubya. We can hope. We can hope.

7. Even that idiot Cornyn knows Bush screwed the pooch on this one
and is joining the call for an investigation. He may be a halfwit, but apparently someone on his advisory team managed to give him one isolated bit of good advice: distance yourself from the Little Emperor on this one, fast!

Speed has never been in question when getting warrants under FISA, they've been granted three weeks after the fact!

Somebody needs to hand Wolf Blister a clue phone on what a pushover the FISA court has been. He may be reachable.

15. Interesting!
If it comes to hearings/censure/impeachment---or steps-toward---BEFORE the '06 elections, it would really be a victory for democracy in this country.

By that I mean that yes, a Democrat-Party-won housecleaning on The Hill will be for the best, and yes, the probable dismantling of the Bush/Cheney/et.al machinery will begin, but...

If the Republicans join in the effort while they're in power, it might be a brighter symbol than the expected partisan retaliations and marginalizing. I'd think it would certainly evidence that the US can "walk the walk," (and not simply invoke "democracy") and might win back some worldwide respect.

Maybe??

24. A real sticky trap because
I doubt Bush even has the ability to contemplate stepping down. Nixon was a fine, adult tragedy. This is what you get with a burned out frat boy on top of the world, Ma.

And then there is Cheney and all the other exposed idiot cronies. And the defanged or complicit Congress and the ruined MSM. What a comic cast.

3. Here we go again.
The first paragraph is about the Patriot Act.

The second paragraph is about the NSA.

Apples and oranges no matter how we try to sell it.

Why don't people read the whole quotes?

never directly linked 9/11 and Iraq.

10. That's what the White House is saying.
But to me it comes across:

1) "We need court order to get wiretaps."

2) "Well, we need to get them t'rrists, so no need for a court".

Contradictory and illegal.

17. And both are trumped by the Constitution
and both require a court order so both quotes apply to the criminal action by bush.

20. He is referring to the same thing.
The NSA issue is a violation of what he says about the Patriot Act. It's not that complicated.

12. Boxer and two congressional Dems mentioned impeachment.
Edited on Tue Dec-20-05 04:14 PM by SeanQuinn
Boxer asked someone if this was impeachable.
John Dean said Bush is the first President to admit to an impeachable offense.
John Lewis, (D-GA), said if this was illegal, then impeach.
Jonathan Alder also mentioned that if we get House and Senate in 2006, we will probably impeach.

Talks about Dean

I do not see how he has the right to to this

John Dean - First time a president has admitted to an impeachable offence

Not ready to say he should be impeached yet

I have also spoken to Joe Biden who actually wrote this law - he is very concerned

There is no excuse why they cannot use checks and balances to protect our freedoms

Boxer mentions Rockefellar's letter (spelling sorry)

Wolfie fighting back - Robert's said using this politically

Boxer mentions the Buffalo statement

Why could't they take the time to do this legally?
