Fasten your seatbelts .. we have another circling plane
Edited on Tue Dec-20-05 09:22 PM by Sydnie
Circling Boston. A Midwest plane burning fuel over Boston. Landing gear did not retract fully. Concern is that the tires might have blown out and did not retact into the aircraft properly. Rita (give her air) Crosby is reporting it on MSNBC now.

edit - Midwest not Southwest

1. True Dis
I muted the TV and hoping the plane will be fine. Just some sparks seen so we all hope that isn't too bad.

2. It is Midwest not Southwest Airlines
Is this the fault of outsourced non-union work?

5. A bit premature to jump to that conclusion when we don't even know

what the problem is, or how Midwest handles its maintenance. Fact is, even the most well-maintained airplanes can have mechanical problems; those problems can and do occur even when maintenance is done in-house by union mechanics. These are machines and sometimes stuff breaks. I'm not defending outsourcing; I just don't want to assume facts not in evidence.

6. I realized my error just as I hit the post button
but by the time my slow computer got back to edit, you all had corrected my mistake. Good catch!

Something is wrong with the way maintenance is done on these planes, for sure!

8. See my last post. The fact that something is not working does not
necessarily mean the maintenance was inadequate. There are a lot of reasons why something could malfunction; mechanical problems can occur even under the best circumstances. Let's wait and find out exactly what the problem is before making assumptions.

12. That is true
My ex was a trained airplane mechanic. He never worked on planes. He felt that the reponsibility was just too awesome and not enough of his classmates were properly trained for his comfort. He now works on imported cars exclusively and is, if I say so myself, considered very selfless as he is more concerned with doing the job correctly than he is in "cranking in the book hours". I just know what he had said and wonder if the training was less than it should have been, whether domestic mechanics or otherwise.

3. Actually it's Midwest, not Southwest.
I'd sort of like to see what happens, but I just can't stand listening to Rita. Her voice is just -- EEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!

13. Well, I got curious, so I tuned in, notwithstanding Rita.
Edited on Tue Dec-20-05 09:57 PM by ocelot
And I was amazed at all the wrong information she's spewing. Just for starters, she was talking about dumping fuel, but the Boeing 717 doesn't have the capability to dump fuel. Lots of BS being thrown around, and she is doing her best to sensationalize a situation that is not likely to be a big deal at all.

Well, it just landed safely and uneventfully. I suppose Rita is disappointed -- nothing to honk and caw about now.

plane is down and all is safe. I will now disengage my landing gear and change the channel!
