1. "Do unto others as they would do unto you". Wow, I remebered it.
I was taught it. I practice it. What a concept. THe golden rule hasn't lost its luster. :)

13. Are you sure you are stating that correctly
I thought it was "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you."

Your version seems to say that you should figure out ahead of time how well or poorly people will treat you, and then treat them that well or poorly

2. treating others as you want to be treated invalidates/ignores their needs
we need to acquire a global view and get beyond our myopic tribal little world

3. If I'm describing my world, then I choose the second one.
If I'm describing my principles, then I choose the first. The rest is simply a struggle to reconcile the two.

"The point is ladies and gentlemen that greed, for lack of a better word, is good. Greed is right. Greed works. Greed clarifies, cuts through and captures the essence of the evolutionary spirit. Greed, in all of it's forms - greed for life, for money, knowledge - has marked the upward surge of mankind and greed - you mark my words - will not only save Teldar Paper but that other malfunctioning corporation called the USA. Thank you."

- Michael Douglas as Gordon Gecko in the movie Wall Street

4. Do unto others as they would do unto you...
unless it requires too much paperwork, in which case it's acceptable to circumvent the 4th Amendment and place unauthorized wiretaps on their phones.

7. No sarcasm, I trust, Telly?
Do unto others - Katrina, paperwork ad nauseum, and I am sure it sucks beyond compare to lose your home/job/family/lifestyle/etc., without benefit of their/our gov't, for the most part.
Wiretaps? Don't get me started. It's being acknowledged and needs to be examined and impeached or resigned. There is no reason to have this guy as a prez, he ain't mine.

16. It's a reference to the lame-o excuse the White House
is offering as to why they didn't get warrants for those wiretaps: too much paperwork.

I haven't been a big fan of impeachment because it's a fairly meaningless symbolic gesture. (One would have to go so far down the chain of succession that it's not 'til you're at the 3rd shift White House parking valet before you'd find someone that would represent a tangible difference from Bush.) But with the wiretaps, for the first time we have a crystal clear case of him directly violating the laws of the United States, so Congressional Democrats might as well launch an attempt at impeachment just for shits and giggles. With a GOP majority in both chambers, it wouldn't go anywhere, but it'd make for good political drama.

5. I forget who said it, but I love this saying...
"Do unto others as you would have them do unto you, all the rest is commentary"

14. Rabbi Hillel said that around 20 BCE
Rabbi Shammai was an engineer, known for the strictness of his views. The Talmud tells that a gentile came to Shammai saying that he would convert to Judaism if Shammai could teach him the whole Torah in the time that he could stand on one foot. Shammai drove him away with a builder's measuring stick! Hillel, on the other hand, converted the gentile by telling him, "That which is hateful to you, do not do to your neighbor. That is the whole Torah; the rest is commentary. Go and study it."

Is the way I've always heard it.

Unfortunately the second statement is reality.
