Famous pastor's wife involved in flight disturbance
"She violently ran towards the cockpit, scaring everyone around her," said passenger Knicky Van Slyke. "Everyone was terrified about what was going on. And a bunch of flight attendants ran up and had to restrain her. She was banging on the door."

12/19/05 - KTRK/HOUSTON) - A dispute that involved the wife of Houston's most famous pastor, Joel Osteen, and a Continental Airlines flight attendant ended up delaying a flight for hours Monday. And now, Victoria Osteen's actions on that flight are in the spotlight.

The Osteens run the largest church in the nation, so passengers on a Continental flight were shocked Monday when Mrs. Osteen was removed from that flight after a disturbance.

Taking time off from the high profile hustle and bustle of running a mega-church, Lakewood Church Pastor Joel Osteen and his family boarded Continental flight 1602 Monday morning at Houston's big airport. They were bound for the slopes in Colorado.

Their trip was delayed and so was the entire flight by almost two hours. Fellow passengers blame the popular Osteens, specifically Joel's wife, Victoria.

According to passenger accounts, the Osteens were sitting in first class. (!!!!) . . . .

28. That was my first reaction when I read the article!
"She violently ran towards the cockpit, scaring everyone around her," said passenger Knicky Van Slyke. "Everyone was terrified about what was going on. And a bunch of flight attendants ran up and had to restrain her. She was banging on the door."

"Of the cockpit?" we asked.

"Yes."

Passengers say Victoria was removed first. Joel and the children followed. Meantime, everyone waited.

"They unloaded all the luggage to get their luggage and deplaned her, Joel, and the kids," said passenger Dawn Dixon.

At least they didn't shoot first and ask questions later. Obviously, not all people all treated equal in this Orwellian world.

This proves yet again the elite evangelicals and their ilk believe the rules do not apply to them. These stories make my head spin.

"They unloaded all the luggage to get their luggage and deplaned her, Joel, and the kids,""

First she gets kicked off the plane for acting like a complete ass and then they hold up all the people so they can get their luggage that is true arrogance!

15. Actually for a Texas preacher, he's not bad
Pretty open-minded and tolerant. A real lack of piety or tendency to be judgemental of others.
This is from an interview with Larry King.

The fundies at the sight I got this from had no kind words for him.

http://forums.crosswalk.com/m_225272/tm.htm

KING: What is the prosperity gospel?

OSTEEN: I think the prosperity gospel in general is -- well I don't know. I hear it too. I don't know. I think what sometimes you see is it's just all about money. That's not what I believe. It's the attitude of your heart, and so you know, we believe -- but I do believe this, that God wants us to be blessed. He wants us to be able to send our kids to college, excel in our careers. But prosperity to me, Larry, is not just money, it's having health. What good is money if you don't have health?

(COMMERCIAL BREAK)

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

OSTEEN: Some of you ladies have been wearing the same flannel bathrobe to bed every night that your grandmother gave you 30 years ago. It's got holes in it. It's as ugly as it can be, and you know it doesn't do anything for you, and it certainly doesn't do anything for your husband. One of the best things that you can do for your marriage is to throw that thing away, and go down to Victoria's Secret and get something good that you can wear. You wonder why Victoria and I have a great relationship? It's called Victoria's Secret.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

......................

KING: Do you ever involve politics in the sermons?

OSTEEN: Never do. My father never ...

KING: Never mention President Bush?

OSTEEN: Well, only to pray. Only to pray. We prayed for President Bush, Clinton, all of them. But I've never been political. My father hasn't. I just, I have no ...

KING: How about issues that the church has feelings about? Abortion? Same-sex marriages?

OSTEEN: Yeah. You know what, Larry? I don't go there. I just ...

OSTEEN: I have thoughts. I just, you know, I don't think that a same-sex marriage is the way God intended it to be. I don't think abortion is the best. I think there are other, you know, a better way to live your life. But I'm not going to condemn those people. I tell them all the time our church is open for everybody.

KING: You don't call them sinners?

OSTEEN: I don't.

KING: Phoenix, Arizona. Hello.

CALLER: Hello, Larry. You're the best, and thank you, Joe -- Joel -- for your positive messages and your book. I'm wondering, though, why you side-stepped Larry's earlier question about how we get to heaven? The bible clearly tells us that Jesus is the way, the truth and the light and the only way to the father is through him. That's not really a message of condemnation but of truth.

OSTEEN: Yes, I would agree with her. I believe that...

KING: So then a Jew is not going to heaven?

OSTEEN: No. Here's my thing, Larry, is I can't judge somebody's heart. You know? Only god can look at somebody's heart, and so -- I don't know. To me, it's not my business to say, you know, this one is or this one isn't. I just say, here's what the bible teaches and I'm going to put my faith in Christ. And I just I think it's wrong when you go around saying, you're saying you're not going, you're not going, you're not going, because it's not exactly my way. I'm just...

KING: But you believe your way.

OSTEEN: I believe my way. I believe my way with all my heart.

KING: But for someone who doesn't share it is wrong, isn't he?

OSTEEN: Well, yes. Well, I don't know if I look at it like that. I would present my way, but I'm just going to let god be the judge of that. I don't know. I don't know.

KING: So you make no judgment on anyone?

OSTEEN: No. But I...

KING: What about atheists?

OSTEEN: You know what, I'm going to let someone -- I'm going to let god be the judge of who goes to heaven and hell. I just -- again, I present the truth, and I say it every week. You know, I believe it's a relationship with Jesus. But you know what? I'm not going to go around telling everybody else if they don't want to believe that that's going to be their choice. God's got to look at your own heart. God's got to look at your heart, and only god knows that.

29. This is why I will not pass judgement on this episode.
Reverend Osteen makes sense. He is good at what he does. I don't know the whole story on his wife, and I will not make snide comments. She may be ill, she may have had a medication reaction, there may be an acceptable explanation. And, by the way, the stewardess should have cleaned up the mess.

But all this is tax free because they are a "church". Reminds of a movie on Showtime I think it was called Paradise. All about a TV evangelist. His family was pretty dysfunctional but he and the other TV evangelists would run into each other at the airport and compare G5s.

Churches don't pay taxes, but individual CLERGY do.

21. I went to school with one of his siblings
and all I'm saying is that all that glitters is not gold.

The historical foundations of the Osteen church include Holy Spirit baptism (speaking in tongues), divine healing, and the Word of faith and prosperity doctrines. There are long time connections between the Osteen ministry and that of Oral and Richard Roberts and Kenneth Hagin. You just don't get much more fundamentalist than these folks. A pig with lipstick is still a pig.

And in a church of 30,000 people, something does not have to be procaimed from the pulpit to be the rule de jour. People who attend these mega-churches often have very little if any personal contact with these preachers. Most people never even shake the guys hand. Instead they are encouraged to attend and become involved in various small groups whose leaders have been selected and trained by the pastor and other church leaders. These mega-church preachers really are slick snake oil salesmen because they often do no hands on personal ministry with the folks in their congregation. Don't give the guy a pass for being inclusive or uninvolved in political matters without looking to see what the folks who actually work hands on with the small groups in the congregation are doing.

That's because they were white and she was blond.

Now let's see, what would have happened if this person was not famous, not white, not blond?

Cops, FBI and all other sorts of alphabet agencies would have been swarming the plane. And maybe, like a few weeks ago, bullets flying.

no racial profiling here...we all know that only terrorists are from the middle east and have dark complexions, while only white people shoot up malls and schools, yup, let's laugh this one off as just another crazy ass white blond acting kooky...

So once again, if you are white and blond you can not only get away with shit like this, but you will probably even be asked if you have been abducted and were trying to get away from your kidnappers. Adding that she was "famous", then the free ticket to ride is complete.

hypocrisy is best served hot and steaming.

Edited on Wed Dec-21-05 12:51 PM by Tactical Progressive
Where are all of the reflex defenders of the Marshals, upset now that they are not "just doing their job"?

Where are the calm, reasoned voices explaining to us that 'you can't afford to risk the safety of a planeload of innocents' with wimpy ask-first/shoot-later protocols, when someone is trying to break into the cockpit?

Could it be that people sometimes get stressed and agitated on planes, for whatever reason, and that it isn't a license to take extreme measures at the drop of a hat?

No, it must be that these Marshals 'weren't doing their job' when they didn't go for 'center mass' right away, if you want to be consistent.

43. more of the story here:
http://www.houstonchronicle.com/disp/story.mpl/front/3538956.html

<< Steele said Victoria Osteen was upset about liquid on her pull-down tray and asked a flight attendant to have it cleaned. When the attendant, who was carrying paperwork to the cockpit, told her she couldn't do it immediately, Osteen replied, "Fine, get me a stewardess who can," Steele said.

She said Victoria Osteen pushed a flight attendant and tried to get into the cockpit. Passengers quoted in the Colorado paper did not address those details.

Soon after, authorities were called to the plane, she said, although it was not clear Tuesday whether they were airline officials.

Garcia said Continental officials contacted the FBI about the incident. The agency decided not to investigate. >>

So they decided not to investigate because of who they are, I guess. If it would have been me or my neighbors down the street, we would have been detained.

64. I see...
It might be something sinister--perhaps dangerous and unhealthy. So call a flight attendant to clean it up (a can of 409 and a tissue will do nicely). Or better yet, have the pilot clean it up--right after you break down the cockpit door.

I sooner think since it wasn't mentioned in the article that this "liquid" was dangerous or unhealthy (since the plane wasn't evacuated), that it was probably water or coffee. Or since this was "first class," it might have been champagne.

68. I'm assuming it was a liquid someone would find on a plane.
Edited on Thu Dec-22-05 12:28 PM by KansDem
Coffee, tea, etc. If it was something dangerous, then one would figure a HAZMAT team would have been called in and the airport shut down. Since it wasn't (according to the article) and the passengers were not evacuated but in fact kept on the plane (with the liquid) for 1 to 2 hours, then one would assume the liquid was harmless...

Assumptions based on facts are tricky, I'll admit, but that's all we can do at times.

78. And I'm guessing you'd also wait 2 seconds for someone to clean it...
...instead of barking to "get another stewardess who can."

I don't care WHAT was on her tray, it doesn't excuse her boorish behavior. Not only should she be ashamed of herself, but if she went to my church, I'd be waiting for her to go forward and ask for forgiveness.

82. What in the world are you talking about?
The only intolerance was in the wife's behavior. WHY are you excusing that? If you're upset over some of the reactions on this board, chalk it up to a distaste for hypocrisy from the religious right.

And no matter how bothered you may be by that, it still doesn't excuse her hideous behavior. Shame on that woman.

used to take pride in showing tolerance for others. I'm not talking about being a sheeple, I would as soon tar and feather Falwell and Robertson as not.
Joel Osteen is not a fire and brimstone fundie minister who sees the devil in everyone, yet he is being accused of all sorts of perverse crap. I will use the same tolerance with him that he shows. You do what you want.

Why can't you just admit that her behavior was shameful? This is NOT about tolerance!

90. Mine has been ONLY to that, and to your absurd suggestion...
...that you would've behaved the same way. YOU attempted to excuse her behavior by saying that you'd be cautious about liquid on your airline tray, too--and my point was that I'm sure you could find a way to deal with it without behaving abusively to the flight attendants.

And still you make excuses for it.

"Anyone could have a bad day." to explain someone losing it for a few seconds (if it really did happen), and expecting forgiveness for her. Truth is, I have had many such bad days. I've usually been forgiven them, then again, I am not a rich Christian Minister's beautiful young wife.

What if it was "precious bodily fluids"? It could be dangerous if it were infected and someone who had a paper cut on the hand touched it. It could also upset a preacher's wife.

"Taking time off from the high profile hustle and bustle of running a mega-church, Lakewood Church Pastor Joel Osteen and his family boarded Continental flight 1602 Monday morning at Houston's big airport. They were bound for the slopes in Colorado."

You would think he would stick around at his mega church on this important religious holiday.

Ill bet the next service they preach they will call Continental Ailrline a product of SATAN and that the Flight crew were instruments of the devil himself.

I wonder if they will ask the memebers to BOYCOTT Continental....They better watch out, they may have that airline employees as members.

Something about Preacher Familys I dont understand....

1....The Wife is always bitchy and self centered.....

2.....the Childern are pure Hellions and rebelious...

3......the Preacher is kind and sincere........

Interesting dynamic if you ask me.

But then, we were LCA (now ELCA) Lutherans, which means that you can't just call yourself a preacher and found a church, you have to go through three years of post-college seminary, do a year of "internship" under the supervision of an older pastor, and then receive a "call" from an existing church before you can be ordained. All the mainstream denominations follow something close to this process.

The process isn't foolproof, but it does weed out most of the nutcases.

60. Here's the real interesting part of this story:
Scenario 1: Mentally ill Latino man freaks out and runs off the plane muttering incoherently (no witnesses said anything about a bomb, only the air marshalls) and is shot not once, but repeatedly.

Scenario 2: Blonde wife of prominent TV preacher freaks out and starts banging on the cockpit door and is quietly escorted out.

Can you say "double standard"?

62. No doubt Mrs. Osteen was OFF HER MEDS
She should not have been flying in such a mentally anguished condition!

Her husband would be to blame if she were shot, for forcing her to get on that "plane to the slopes" when she hadn't taken her medications.

They should have killed her as soon as she approached the cockpit.

How many people were terrorized by her behavior? I'm sure she said "bomb' or some other such word.

She should be dead.

The Reverend's wife was disconcerted when she realized that there were no "first class" section, no servants, and no luggage compartment, on the Plane to Heaven. "I can't travel in the midst of these smelly poor people who have torn clothes... they look like they slept outdoors last night. And... how do you get some service around here? I can pay! We're rich! We're important! We matter! And how am I supposed to transport my jewelry and hair-coloring equipment if we can't bring luggage??"
