Elton John prepares to 'marry'
Sir Elton John and his partner, David Furnish, will tie the knot today to become one of England's first legally bound gay couples.

The celebrity gay wedding will take place at a private ceremony this morning at the Guildhall in Windsor, where the Prince of Wales married Camilla Parker Bowles in April, just hours after Britain's civil partnership law came into force across England and Wales.

The law, which gives homosexual couples the same property and inheritance rights as married heterosexuals and entitles them to the same pension, immigration and tax benefits, came into effect in Northern Ireland earlier this week.
snip
"Their same-sex civil partnership ceremony will be reported all over the world including in countries where news about gay issues is normally never reported," he said. "This will give hope to millions of isolated, vulnerable, lesbian and gay people especially those living in repressive and homophobic countries."

Happy day for many people who thought they would always be treated like some alien beings.

1. Guess I better start burning all those Elton John albums...
But seriously -

How long have they been together. I don't pay much attention to celebrities, but I seem to recall hearing that name associated with him in the past. Anyone know?

Congratulations to them, too...

6. a long long time
so long that his name wasn't known for years so that they could have a life. The party sounds like it is going to be a real one
An hour later, the formalities over, Sir Elton, 52, and Mr Furnish, 43, emerged smiling for a further round of photographs and celebratory hugs. The couple were given a wedding cake by two fans before driving away for lunch and to prepare for this evening's £1 million reception, which will take place in an enormous, white, lily-decorated marquee laid out in the grounds of Sir Elton's mansion outside Windsor.

Tonight's party, originally described as an intimate soiree for 50 guests, has swollen to become a huge, fame-filled occasion.

Around 700 people, including Victoria Beckham (her husband was reportedley detained by Real Madrid), Liz Hurley, Donatella Versace, Graham Norton and various members of the Osbourne family have been invited to join Sir Elton and Mr Furnish for pink champagne, roast lamb and a chocolate log.

Why did the word monkeys (at The TimesUK) feel the need to add the single quotation marks around the word 'marry'?

*edit:clarity*

27. Because it is not a legal marriage
to the annoyance of some people. Surely you've seen the arguments about marriage v. civil union, or civil partnership? I understood it was a talking point in the USA, especially during the 2004 election.

33. Of course.
But they could have just said, "Elton John Prepares for Civil Union." Snarky quotes may sell newspapers, but that kinda stuff doesn't fly in respectable journalism.

29. Just bureaucratic word-play
The official term is Civil Partnership.

You know it means marriage, I know it means marriage, but as long as it doesn't include the word marriage the Church of England won't put up a fight over it and the right-wing nutters over here won't start frothing at the mouth at the thought.

43. I think it's because
the couples feel like they are marrying. It is a marriage, just not legally that word.

"Civil union" is not what couples feel they are uniting in.

Whatever it is called I am so happy another country is offering more rights, rights all deserve.

Sad that we are going backward while other countries move ahead.

5. I never could understand why....
since in the first place, being gay isn't illegal and gay people are expected to pay the same taxes as the rest of society, so why are they not entitled to the same rights as the rest are. Legalized discrimination is all it amounts to.

9. Because, if they are gay, and they can get married, then it proves
that society thinks its ok to be gay. And if its ok to be gay, then its not ok to be straight, right?

Plus, if young children see a gay couple walking around, they might just think they are two friends. But if they see that couple with wedding rings on, then they will know that they are looking at two gay people. Then, those innocent children might catch "the gay". Its contagious...

Extreme :sarcasm:, as you probably guessed.

17. A personal story.
I had a coworker, a middle aged black woman, gay who was extremely involved in the the community as far as keeping black children in school, off drugs and out of gangs but she said in her own neighborhood all the parents were telling their kids, "you stay away from those two gay black women now you here".

Pretty sad huh?
