I want to make enough money at my job to pay my bills, keep my roof over my head, have medical insurance for illnesses, dependable transportation, enough money to buy a few gifts for my grandkids here and there, and a vacation once a year. That's all I've ever really wanted out of life. That's my list and that's it. I've managed to do just that since I turned 30. At 50, the last 3 or 4 years have been harder. Prices are higher, wage increases less frequent. My car is getting old, and a yearly vacation has become a memory. I probably sound bitchy and spoiled compared to the lifestyle of a lot of people, including my own grown children, but I think my list is probably truth for a lot of people. In other words, I'm firmly middle-class. I think the majority of us have been chopping bits off our lists of lifestyle, quietly and without notice. We stare at our heating bills and turn down our thermostats.
I've voted for the democratic party my entire adulthood. I've always felt that the democratic party provides the ways and means for a bigger majority to obtain the lifestyle of their choice.
The difference between parties has always seemed to me to be the following:
What will democrats do for us as a country? What will republicans do for ME?
As more and more lifestyles degrade, I believe more will turn democrat.
