Divorce proceedings should be public record --- Discuss
The president of a privately-held local bank has asked that his divorce proceedings be closed to "protect the children". More and more wealthy people are asking for this.

Sometimes it seems reasonable.

Other times, these records reveal things of legitimate interest to the public: the obscene salaries of executives at privately-held companies, the sexual escapades of Senatorial candidates (hello, Jack Ryan).

Your take?

1. Hehee...
Only *part* of Ryan's past came out you know...

I suspect the rest will if he ever dares run for office again.

2. throw it all open
Now that we know our government spys on us and we are fair game, so are they. How could anyone suggest we should "respect" a politician's privacy, or any one's privacy. As long as our phones and emails are tapped, I think it should all come out. Frankly I find many of our political, religious, corporate, and community leaders to be a credible threat and we need to protect ourselves from them.

6. So because our illegitimate government spies on us we should
be able to spy on each other? Who needs privacy anyway?

Unless you are suggesting that only the records of the people YOU want to spy on be open to the public but then we'd have that whole slippery slope thing going on there, wouldn't we?

3. Why are the "obscene salaries of executives at PRIVATEly-held..
companies" a legitimate interest of the public?

Why are the "sexual escapades" (as long their legal...if they are not they would be on the public record in criminal records) of ANYONE a legitimate interest to the public?

8. Thank you
Are we so eager to do to "them" what they want to do to "us" that we're willing to sacrifice our values in the process?

11. Apparently, many of "us" are eager to do just that.
I'm glad that you and I can agree that this is wrong.

Happy Holidays to you and yours!

4. In the interest of fairness, it should be noted
that John Kerry's divorce proceedings from Juliet Thorne were sealed and and stayed sealed during the recent election in spite of attempts by the press and the Republicans to get them opened.

Not that I think they would show much other than adultery, but still..this works both ways. Of course, Dems rarely run on a platform of "restoring purity and sexual morality to public office and legislating people's private lives" so they're rarely shown to be hypocrites when someone looks at their private life.

5. Protecting the children should be up to the parents,
a divorce is a legal proceeding. The documents associated with it are all recorded (well at least mine are) in the county Protho's Office. If the parents want to protect the children then don't make it a public spectacle and settle your differences in private.

13. Absolutely
If the parents behaved appropriately, there would be nothing to protect the children from. What a bunch of malarky.

7. We should amend the constitution to prohibit divorce, for the sake
of the sanctity of marraige.

If we can't do that, then they should have to repay (with interest) all tax breaks that they got for being married should they decide to dissolve it. Not my fault they can't make decisions and oaths before God that they can't stick to - I'm tired of paying the bill for it.

14. Anyone getting a divorce. The rationale behind the tax breaks is
the gov't has an interest in promoting stable families. Well, if they aren't going to remain together, then they're no longer stable, which means the tax breaks they got to promote them staying together failed - we should get a refund.

9. Divorce proceedings ARE public records, I believe
All you have to do is have the case number and order a copy of the transcript from the county clerk's office.
