Poll question: Who aren't people enlisting?
A)
They are seeing less in their country that's worth defending

B)
Pure selfishness, nothing more

C)
They will not fight and die over a lie (or series of lies)

D)
They know it's all about the corporate power and will not die for a group of people who want to see us dead because we're too much a financial liability for their profits

E)
More than one of the above (excluding "B")

F)
More than one of the above (including "B")

1. They're not seeing the military honor its end of the bargain
If you're gay and you enlist and get discharged you are given a bill for your education and room and board.

If you take a lifetime injury you will not have your medical bills fully paid.

If you had to leave a sole proprietor business, your business debts are not guaranteed or forgiven.

If you've served your time, they can still opt to keep you in until you're really most sincerely dead.

That's why they like to recruit young and inexperienced - before you have a chance to educate yourself about the way things work or to have a complex worldview.

That, and fewer and fewer people believe this is a just war. If they're enlisting, it's not to support the war, it is to hopefully not die in it and be able to take advantage of the GI bill.

3. Good points; I forgot about those...
Vet pension funds being cut, other vet benefits being axed...

Yeah. These guys in power want people to defend this nation but won't even provide just due services. :dunce:

4. Why, why, HypnoToad, they have those "Support
our troops" stickers on their gaz-guzzling (usually) vehicles.

What more do you expect? :sarcasm:

Seriously, lots of people are in favor of , "Let's go over there and kick butt!" until it's their butt that's in danger of being kicked.

9. They think they can win a war on propaganda alone
It's unbelievable to me. What would really win this war is stop using so much oil, get more people to enlist/or a draft, an examination of our tactics to see what we can do better and possibly pay more taxes so we have more money to do things in Iraq but we can't mention any of those things because that would be unpopular. Magnetic ribbons and patting ourselves on the back about how well we are doing is going will not win the war.

7. Because the current slogans say that soldiers die for freedom;
and it seems that most Americans will give up their freedoms at the first "boo" from a "terrist". So they really aren't qualified...

10. The obvious seems to be
they just don't want to die or risk harm. Not sure that is pure selfishness, but if so, B.
