Iran's victory revealed in Iraq election (Robert Scheer, SF Chronicle)
<snip>

What we will leave behind, after hundreds of billions of dollars and tens of thousands of lost lives, will be a long ways from the neoconservative fantasy of creating a compliant democracy in the heart of the Middle East. It is absurd for Bush to assert that the election "means that America has an ally of growing strength in the fight against terror," ignoring how he has "lost" Iraq to the influence and model of "Axis of Evil" Iran. Tehran's rogue regime, which has bedeviled every U.S. president since Jimmy Carter, now looms larger than ever over the region and most definitely over its oil. "Iran wins big in Iraq's election," reads an Asia Times headline, speaking a truth that American policy makers and much of the media is bent on ignoring: "The Shiite religious coalition, the United Iraqi Alliance (UIA), not only held together, but also can be expected to dominate the new 275-member National Assembly for the next four years," the paper predicts based on the returns to date. "Former premier Ayad Allawi's prospects of leading the new government seem virtually nil. And Ahmed Chalabi's Iraqi National Accord suffered a shattering defeat."

1. I can't wait to see how the neocons spin this
How will they explain the thousands maimed and killed so Iraq could become an Islamic theocracy?

4. Wait and see if Iraq signs onto the new Iranian Oil Bourse...
Due to open early next year. They will be trading in Oil Futures... in PETROEUROS, not PETRODOLLARS...

Suddenly, that predicted Mid-March Israeli attack on Iran doesn't seem HALF so unlikely...

5. Great article!
It is going to take some time for this to break through to our bobblehead media.

8. Mark, I don't get it either. It's crazymaking!
All those lives sacrificed to create an Islamic state whose majority party in their Parliament is now closely allied with IRAN, a member of the "axis of evil." The "nightmare scenario" for the U.S. came true.

It's all over the international press but once again a crucial story gets censored by the electronic Berlin wall that our media has become.

Is this crazy or what? Sounds like something out of "Through the Looking Glass" to me. Absolutely crazymaking!

9. I've discussed this with people ...

... and the look on their faces is astonishment. Iran? Really? Nawww.

Like after this election the Iraqi people were going to demand and get
Wal*Mart Supercenters, golf courses and Dunkin Donut shops.

How people can know and supposedly care about Iraq voting without
giving a second of thought to who it is they actually voted FOR is flat out
bizarre.

I truly despair for the survival of our democracy.
