"Fair and Balanced" CNN questions businesses if strikers are "UNPATRIOTIC"
Edited on Wed Dec-21-05 04:18 PM by jsamuel
CNN showed 2 business owners from NYC about strike. That's all, no other view.

Then Carol Lin asks them if the strikers are "unpatriotic". Then started to cry for the poor business owners. (yes it is bad for them, but no sympathy for the workers who were striking)

1. What the fuck does 'patriotism' have to do with it?
What kind of society are we running here?

14. for yrs, coverage of strikes has been abt probs for consumers, businesses
.....never abt workers' problems that might make them want/need to strike

this has been especially true for airline workers strikes ('the poor, inconvenienced passengers') and the UPS strike ('the poor people who can't get their packages delivered')

2. shame on Bloomberg
no discussion of the sticking points, walking to work (AS IF he uses public transportation), grandstanding, and otherwise trying to beat with a stick.

Shame on Bloomberg for not diverting attention from the fact that he didn't have a plan to deal with this, in the event that he pushed too far.

Why on earth couldn't they have gotten to an agreement before this happened? It IS a failure on Bloomberg's part. He didn't ask for a TWU negotiation extension - he just tried to bully his way through the deadline, and again, he didn't have a plan for failure. Who does that sound like.

5. It isn't Bloomberg's ballgame
MTA is state- Pataki is building up brownie points for his GOP Presidential campaign.
Sad thing is that Bloombergs personal Bush tax cut would probably cover the health care contribution for the whole union. And the $90 million he spent to get coronated mayor would probably go a long way to covering the pensions.

12. so why does bloomberg control the news cycle on this?
He IS clearly and shamelessly participating in the media event.

Isn't it funny how the real dividing line between republicans and dems and between republican-style ultra-capitalists and labor always falls along populist economics?

You have to wonder what is so hard about taking care of the people who take care of you? I remember once a bajillion years ago as a starving student being short of money for a token back up to the cloisters and the token guy just slid me a token.

I came back the very next day and he wasn't there, and the following day, and the day after when he was back on shift and tried to pay for that token and the guy just said, 'tsokay, you just pass it along to someone else who needs it.

And whenever I got my tokens after that this scowling old guy who never smiled at nobody would brighten up and give me the biggest smile.

If you don't take care of your legs, don't expect to keep walking. Why is it so hard to think of doing the same for your public transportation?

13. Bloomberg doesn't need a token for the subway
and beside, the transit workers are minorities, so the pay window closes on their hands (after the teachers and the police got generous new contracts).

10. There are some racial undertones
to all of the coverage- most of the transit workers are minorities. Not to mention the union leader has GASP an accent! If transit workers were white they would have their contract right now.
