Judge Says Union Chiefs May Face Jail
Roger Toussaint, the leader of the transit workers union, was meeting with a mediator this afternoon as the transit strike, which began at 3 a.m. Tuesday, stretched into its second day. As the meeting was going on, a judge suggested that union officials could face jail sentences over the strike.

lawyer for Transport Workers Union, Local 100, told Justice Theodore T. Jones of State Supreme Court about the meeting between Mr. Toussaint and a mediator from the state's Public Employment Relations Board during a hearing this afternoon in Brooklyn.

Justice Jones ordered Mr. Toussaint and two other union officials to appear in his courtroom at 11 a.m. Thursday, saying their presence is required because of the possibility that he will sentence one or more of the three to jail.

The judge's remarks, which appeared to surprise attorneys on both sides of the case, came as the lead attorney for the state argued for a contempt order against the three union officials.

2. Going to jail for the TWU is an honor
Edited on Wed Dec-21-05 04:24 PM by Jersey Devil
Mike Quill became a martyr when he died shortly after going to jail for them in the 60s. When told he had to go back to work or go to jail, he said the judge could "drop dead in his black robes"

3. That's too sad.
To have to die in jail. I would be willing to go to jail for something I wholly believe in. That's just me.

from the effects of a heart attack he had in jail. It may as well have been in jail for all intents and purposes.

5. If it's jail for union leaders, what do we have for Presidents who lead
the country into an illegal war and spy on Americans in violation of Constitutional guarantees?

6. How about the 14% to 28% pay raises that NYState judges lobbied for?
Justice Theodore T. Jones was quite active in lobbying for such raises... along with a COLA. It's too fucking bad that transit workes can't get the deal the judges lobbied for!

8. oh and you know Theo ain't gonna back down
no matter what the ramifications. Once a judge goes all "contempt" on your ass, to quote Richard Pryor, thas yo ass, man.

This idiot needs to pipe down and let it go to arbitration - his EGO is getting in the way.

9. I SO agree with you.
If they are in arbitration, let it stand at that, and see where it leads. Perhaps they should threaten Kalikow with jail time. Maybe THEN he would show up to the bargaining table.
