The Corporatization of Election Polling Places?

Poll work gets corporate twist

Sponsorship of precincts to help charities

Next year, Broward County voters may be casting ballots at the AutoNation precinct or the Publix polling place.

Corporate sponsorships, so far largely confined to sports stadiums and arenas, became part of the election process on Tuesday.

Elections Supervisor Brenda Snipes and Doug Weber, president of United Way of Broward County, announced the unique sponsorship program as part of a dual strategy to raise money for charity and recruit poll workers. Part of the effort will be encouraging corporations and 68 agencies funded by United Way to adopt their own polling place or group of polling places.

Companies wouldn't get formal naming rights, Snipes said. The precinct location on a voter's registration card won't be changed from a number and letter designation like 29N to a corporate name.

But employees sent to work at a polling place can all wear corporate T-shirts, according to Snipes. The company can place a sign showing corporate sponsorship outside the precinct.

I posted this in the Florida forum, http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=145&topic_id=6259&mesg_id=6259

but it won't get much attention, and I'm rather annoyed. There's no way I'm walking into a Wal Mart to cast a ballot!

2. Oh ba-a-a-a-d idea..
The LAST thing we need in this already over-corporatized process is more corporations...

Again, this reveals how every single citizens participation is SO VITAL to maintain a fair and balanced Democracy.

This needs to be sent to every voting citizen here in the U.S.

Thank you for posting Synnical.

4. Voter Disenfranchisement
Edited on Thu Dec-22-05 12:43 AM by Synnical
Copying comments I made to the Florida forum:

I don't know how I feel about this. It's not exactly privatizing the polls, but, as an atheist, I don't care so much for walking into a church to cast my vote. At least they cannot proselytize. But, a corporate venue? Are they going to be hawking items as I take on the (hopefully) heady task of casting a vote? I admit it may be more convenient and I like the idea of the funds going to charity, though I'm not a big fan of the United Way (too much goes to administration).

And there's no way I'm walking into a Wal Mart, not even to cast a vote. So, that equates to voter disenfranchisement.

Edit for bad typing and duplicate words.
