House Intelligence panel agrees on plan to investigate Cunningham

Wednesday, December 21, 2005

(12-21) 17:44 PST SAN DIEGO, (AP) --

The chairman of the House Intelligence Committee and the ranking Democrat said Wednesday they agreed on a plan to investigate whether former California Rep. Randy "Duke" Cunningham compromised intelligence.

Rep. Jane Harman, D-Venice, had previously called the plans inadequate, saying Intelligence Committee Chairman Pete Hoekstra should use outside, nonpartisan or bipartisan staff for the probe of Cunningham's work on the committee.

Under the plan released Wednesday in Washington, D.C., the inquiry team will include an outside special counsel and two staff members, one Republican and one Democrat. The committee leaders also asked the Justice Department to assign someone.

"This carefully crafted agreement represents our commitment to ensuring the integrity and security of the House Intelligence Committee is maintained," Hoekstra, R-Mich., and Harman said in a joint statement. "Mr. Cunningham's actions were reprehensible and wrong."
