Deficit-Reduction Bill Even with Cheney's Tie-Breaking Vote, Not Law Yet
Edited on Wed Dec-21-05 11:22 PM by IndyOp
I hate the title "Deficit-Reduction Bill" - a lie. Better termed the "Scrooge Bill".

What do y'all make of this:

Surprisingly, the flurry of activity left several bills short of final passage in a Congress where Republicans hold majorities in both houses.

Senate Republicans said they expected the House to approve a $493 billion defense spending bill -- shorn of the ANWR provision -- on Thursday. Ditto for the Patriot Act extension.

But Democrats in the House said they would not agree to speed action on the deficit-reduction bill they voted against unanimously earlier this week.

The House approved the measure in the pre-dawn hours of Monday, but the Democrats' leader, Rep. Nancy Pelosi of California, said she will insist it be re-examined ''in the light of day'' the next time. That's likely to be in February.

1. Spec-tacular!!
Their little rally round Delay stunt is going to end up giving us plenty of time to expose this phony bill and let people know there's more tax give-aways in it than there are cuts. Not to mention losing the right to hold hospitals accountable if they refuse treatment to the poor.

This just tickles me. Go Nancy!!!

2. So I read that right?
I am so tired right now that I wasn't sure. Yee-ha!

Low-income heating assistance plan passed in the Senate (in Defense Appropriations Bill) and so did Katrina Relief - all in all - whew!

4. Yup, win win win
We won everything this week. Even the Patriot Act is a win because they thought they were going to slam dunk that one down our throats too. The House bill was atrocious and we beat it back. They'll have to come back and likely pass the Senate version which is supported by the ACLU. Just a great great day!

3. wonderful!
This draconian bill is NOT seeing the light it deserves. It is gonna fuck up a lot of people's lives and will set social services back 20 years. Anything that they can do to delay and then kill is excellent news. I would just be happy to see it stalled for now as that pushes it closer to the election and might cause people to vote conscience (read scrutiny of voters)instead of party line.
