When will Gallup and Zogby follow MSNBC's lead?
Edited on Thu Dec-22-05 11:22 AM by Protagoras
All the new MSNBC surveys are invigorating and a good start in expressing how CLEARLY we feel about our civil liberties,
but they aren't polls...they aren't representitive of the public at large, they are easily ignored or repressed, and they are completely dismissable insofar as structure or validity go.

We need some REAL polls asking these questions. Zogby, Gallup, etc should be out there doing this...I suspect the DNC could commission them to do so. Perhaps they already have. If anyone happens to get a call from one asking such things please let us know. And if anyone knows anyone in a position to spark such an event please give them a nudge.

We might even want to email the DNC and encourage them to get out there and take a scientific pulse of the public on the issue of how soon Bush should be impeached and what we think about him raping our contitution (that might be a biased construct).

edit: appears I posted a few minutes too soon. Gallup at least has this little blurb http://poll.gallup.com/content/default.aspx?ci=20572 but can't login to read the whole thing yet...

Americans Protective of Civil Rights
Two-to-one majority opposes violation of civil rights in fight against terrorism
by David W. Moore

By a 2-to-1 margin, Americans say they're opposed to allowing the government to violate basic civil liberties while fighting terrorism. When asked specifically about the Patriot Act, about one-third say it "goes too far." These views are highly related to party affiliation, with Republicans more supportive of the Patriot Act and of allowing the government to violate civil liberties while fighting terrorism than are either independents or Democrats.

2. MSNBC isn't scientific
and I doubt that Gallup or Zogby would show 87% favoring impeachment. But hopefully as people start hearing more about this they will begin to show more people coming out for impeachment.

5. Correct and correct
as I indicated in the OP...we NEED actual polls. That's why I called what MSNBC was doing a "survey" instead of a poll. But the response on MSNBC does seem to indicate something is up. And we need to start tracking what that "something" is in a more formal way. It appears Gallup may be doing this. Anyone who knows more about zogby feel free to post that up as well.

And of course we won't have 88% of people in a scientific poll screaming for impeachment today...but if a scientific poll starts showing even 50% today we may be on to something HUGE. That's why I'd like to get some more accurate and realistic data...because it helps us know how close to the endgame we are actually getting.

8. At the same time, five people in a home with one computer only vote once.
Yes ... there ARE ways of circumventing each and every technique used to preclude ballot-box-stuffing ... but that cuts both ways.

7. A general election isn't "scientific" either.
Such online polls only reflect the opinions of those who actually vote, just like a general election. There is no stated or inferred extrapolation to any larger population. None. So, enough of meaningless observations about what it "isn't" and one point about what it is: It's how people voted who bothered to surf over to MSNBC's site. From that standpoint, MSNBC's marketing and editorial people will take note. To the degree that such commercial enterprises pander to their audience's attitudes, such polls affect the marketing and editorial decisions these people will make. Take this to the bank: They don't spend money on such online polls for no purpose!

Now, one could argue until the cows come home about the kinds of rationalizations and reactions these people will have regarding such results. We can also argue about how much attention they'll give to such results. Hell, DUers argue about everything, including how many angels fit on the head of a pin. Indeed, ignorance seems to facilitate argument on DU - after all, it's more fun when facts don't get in the way. (That's why prognostication is so popular here, I think.)

The only thing that not arguable is that such a result is noteworthy - and reflects attitudes of at least those 65,000+ people ... who, at least, know how to spell MSNBC.

4. when will msnbc start broadcasting content that reflects its own polls?
msnbc sucks except olberman and I think they only allow it because he is comedy-sarcasm. if he was serious like donahue with the same stories then ratings be damned and he would be out on the street.

i cant stand any cable news, they spend all of their time pretending that there is no right or wrong and its all just up for 'discussion'. have a murderer and a baby on and say its 2 sides of a debate. nope not for me. news should not be a debate, it should be a quest for facts.
