NOTE THE DATE

Make your plans now to participate in drowning out Bush's lies:

1) 1/31, on the night of Bush’s State of the Union address: In large cities and small towns all across the country - join in rallies to make the demand that "Bush Step Down" the news & message of the day. At 9pm EST - just as Bush starts to speak we will bring on the noise and drown out his address - bring your voice, and make a commitment to the world that not another year will be lived under this criminal regime.

2) Demonstrate the following Saturday, 2/4, in Washington DC to deliver the people's verdict on Bush’s criminal regime - "Bush Step down and take your program with you!" Contact your local chapter to purchase your plane or bus ticket now.

1. In Latin America they start banging pots and pans when the
dictator starts a televised speech. If enough participate, it effectively suppresses the propaganda.

Please, everyone kick this.

Participation in this particular action is wide and diverse (see the list of supporters on the homepage)... stand with Mark Leno of San Francisco, Granny D, Progressive Democrats of America, and all the beautiful Americans who will stand for democracy against Bush and his program of hate, war, and injustice.

he has to say, since it will be greatly discussed for weeks afterwards. Maybe he'll come out with another Niger/yellowcake whopper. It's your desire that people get shut out from that.

Why are you afraid of people hearing what he has to say? Do you not have faith in the American people?

30. I do both...
I make loud noise right after they announce "the POTUS..." yell and make noise out the window then when you feel refreshed and as all the bootlickers on the right side of the isle are still clapping away grab your beers or shots and get ready to play the state of the union drinking game! My advice: if you want to get really wasted drink every time he says "VICTORY"

for free. if people really want the info, they can get it.
or if they are sure they've heard it all before, they can protest during.
trust me, you go to one of these things, if you stick around you'lll hear all *'s talking points dissected immediately afterward. you'll walk away more informed than someone who watched it on the news.
It's not going to be a bunch a people with their head in the sand.

gosh i've never met that sort, usually it's yadda yadda yadda till the cows come home.
the "drowning out" is symbolic... it may not be your tradition, but it's hilarious you think people would plan this with intent to leave people uninformed. they will walk away with loads of info, new contacts, w/ *'s talking points already disarmed.
that's how it works when you join a group action, whatever the action itself might be.

I guess the drowning-out part set me off. I want everyone to listen to the address and the responses. I want the best informed electorate we can have. And to be most informed, people have to be exposed to all news, in its rawest form.

Thanks for responding.

Happy Holidays to you and yours!

37. i know what you mean... but making some noise
is a means to an end, attention. not much for group things myself, but i think it can bring in some people who don't have like minded friends, as we do. we all now how fustrating it is to sit and watch these things without a friend to throw things at the TV with. hopefully some people will get out of the house and share their anger and disappointment. go home and write a good LTTE or their reps.
One hopes.
Have a very merry holiday yourself!

26. Just replay last year's speech
Go to the rally. This fool never says anything he hasn't said before. It's a difficult task for him to even rearrange the wording. Same 'ol, same 'ol ... and none of it worth missing a 100th time rerun of Law & Order for ... let alone missing the opportunity to make a statement - loud and proud. It's only when "good people do nothing ..." except sit in front of the goofball box watching Fools Oddballs & Xenophobe (FOX, in case you missed that one) ... that running the country gets into the hands of people like this jerk in the first place. Too much TV and not enough personal action can make the world a miserable place for everyone.

49. So you believe only the privileged class has the right to speak?
The only way for the non-privileged to be heard is to unite and speak as one. It can be tricky to get so many people together, and an event such as the SOTU can serve as an excellent opportunity to do just that.

And of course people who stay home for the SOTU will in fact be able hear and see it. So the demonstration is not limiting the freedom of speech of Bush.

17. First, no one will be prevented from hearing the pig's words.
I don't know of any plans to go into neighbors living rooms and make noise, this will take place on the streets... consider it appropriate ambient noise. I doubt if banging pots will infringe on your right to hear the words of the pig *live*. Secondly, of course, there will be transcripts and rebroadcasts (almost as many as a Janet Jackson flash).

Lastly, YES, we do have faith in the American people. This is the home of Martin Luther King, of Malcolm, of Mark Twain, of Kurt Vonnegut, the Dixie Chicks, Willie Nelson, Snoop Dog and Woody Guthrie, of Dorothy Day and Cesar Chavez.... YES, I trust American people will resist the tyranny of King George, and will do more than sit in front of their TV, but will do something to make a new world possible!

or record it and watch it if we can stomach it ( I generally can't). But the time to protest most effectively is when the address is happening not after it, not before it, during it.

46. The main one will be in DC. There will probably be regional ones too
I think the details are being worked out. Do something in your community if you can't make it to DC.
http://worldcantwait.net/

If it were up to me, I think eventually we should plan something very radical... still non-violent and creative. The poor people's campaign comes to mind as a model. See the history of that here:
http://www.stanford.edu/group/King/about_king/encyclopedia/poorpeoples.html

That was not a "success" due to a number of factors, but the idea is to have a campaign of direct action (not merely a one day street action). The call in this instance would be the end of the bush regime and its full agenda of war against poor people both here and abroad (so we will NOT replace george with hillary, for example). We could demand a new government. New elections (nothing in the Constitution says there can't be a new election called).

Still, the talking chimp is a better act... I DO agree with one of his predecessors. It's about Bedtime for Bonzo.
