40. I agree, however that doesn't mean a bus driver doesn't deserve better
wages, it just means we have to work to raise teachers' pay also. It's not a one or the other thing.

45. hmm, from what I hear it's something like $40.000, doesn't sound
like much if one is living in NYC. If I'm wrong correct me, I'm a union worker working 12 hour days, 6 days a week right now because of Christmas, so I haven't been paying much attention that last 3 weeks.

63. I read that the average wage for bus drivers was $62,000
More than teachers, more than police, more than subway motormen! Zero contributions to medical or pension. I'm not making a judgement about the strike other than to say this doesn't strike me as a bad compensation package, from the workers' standpoint at least.

78. I didn't say that I did, either
I really don't have a strong opinion either way on the merits of the negotiation positions. I can understand why the MTA wants concessions on pensions and medical, and I can certainly understand why the union resists.

96. Apply for a bus driver job? That's a good one!
Everyone in NYC knows that you not only have to know someone, but have to wait until an employee dies or retires to work for transit! Apply for the job? That's the best one I've heard all day.

68. Here's some data from wikipedia

FOR NEW YORK CITY

Men and women have a median income of $37,435 and $32,949 respectively. 21.2% of the population and 18.5% of families are below the poverty line, of whom 30.0% are under the age of 18 and 17.8% are 65 and older.

Exactly half of the men in NYC make less that $37.4k per year and exactly half of the women in NYC make less than $33k per year.

76. Like I said, not bad compensation
Mind you, I am not making a judgement on the strike, I'm just saying that the bus drivers are well compensated, especially when compared to other public workers and especially the subway motormen, who make a lot less. Can't figure that out.

65. Of course not, why should a lowly worker have ANY leverage, right?
They should just happily accept any terms they're offered. Who do they think they are anyway, wanting the pensions they were promised?

Perhaps the STATE is the one that wielded the weapon against the public. Ever thought of that?

benefits, etc. Instead of pissing about how transit workers get paid better than teachers, cops, firefighters, why the hell aren't we all in the streets demanding better everything for ALL? I'm already there, care to join me? It was lonely for awhile, but more are coming around.

Actually, I think they may have agreed to go back to work while negotiating. If things go bad, NY'ers can continue learning about life without public transportation.

9. ...as the city breathes a sigh of relief.
Having experienced, and been affected by a transportation strike in my city, my heart went out to New Yorkers. Most drive here and the public transportation was unreliable at best, but without ANY I could do nothing at that time--I had no car and cabbing it here isn't an option.

I can only imagine how debilitating such a thing would be in a city the size of NY, that actually has a decent transportation system, for residents to rely on.

Small business and low income workers have really taken a hit. It hasn't touched my pocketbook but it surely has touched many. Making minimum wage in the city and not being able to get to work or paying taxi fare can really cut into peoples finances.

38. Whatever "debilitation" is short term compared to the long term gains
that the union will have gained for it members and any other union members in this city in the future.
Two tiered pension and health care systems means that new employees have poorer benefits than long-term employees, and ultimately means that employers will get rid of long term employees and keep the lower-overhead newer employees.
This would be a disaster for all union members, and you can be sure that precedent set by a municipal employer, the private sector would be next.

83. The taxi fares--OMG!
I saw that on the news! Some companies hiked up their fares so they could make even MORE during the strike...horrible!

When we had the strikes here, a few decent samaritans went out with vans to offer people rides--one guy on the news collected a flat rate of $5.00 per person, a tad more than bus fare and a transfer, but still reasonable. At the time, enough to make gas money and a tiny profit.

93. Cab Fares
Cab fares were restructured to enable cabbies to pick up more than one passenger. In fact, they were strongly encouraged by their companies to travel with full vehicles all the time. Some were giving people a break, some were kind of rigid about it, and some were outright gouging.

Just as you'd expect. :D

Under the HOV laws, cars and cabs were not allowed in Manhattan with less than four passengers after 5:00 a.m. If you have less than four, you had to turn around and go back. Car services were charging passengers up to $45 each to get to work.

It is not clear precisely when members of Transit Workers Union, Local 100, would return to their jobs and get subways and buses running again. The union's executive board must first accept the settlement framework, although mediators said the union's leaders had agreed to ask the executive board to approve the recommendations.

"Over the last 48 hours we have met separately with both T.W.U. and the M.T.A.," Richard A. Curreri said at a news conference this morning. "While these discussions have been fruitful, an agreement remains out of the parties' reach at this time. It is clear to us, however, that both parties have a genuine desire to resolve their differences."

Mr. Curreri added: "In the best interests of the public, which both parties serve, we have suggested, and they have agreed, to resume negotiations while the T.W.U. takes steps toward returning its membership to work."

Details of a settlement could take at least a day or two longer to be finalized, although buses and subways would be running before that.

30. They said it might take up to 12 hours to inspect the tracks, trains and
busses and get everything back to working order.

79. They're telling us
They're telling us not to depend on full service for tomorrow morning's rush. My company has decided to offer shuttle bus service tonight and tomorrow morning.

After that, back to the rails, and all that that entails.

Everybody that says bus drivers make too much money should try to haul one of those big-ass NYC busses through traffic, around tight intersections, deal with some obnoxious riders ... and get us where we're going on time (more or less) and in one piece almost every time.

They don't have many accidents, either.

Let's pay everybody more. It is ridiculous paying people $5.15 an hour in a city where the best deal you can get on a two-bedroom apartment (in an outer neighborhood of an outer borough) is about $1300, plus fees, plus possibly a bribe to the management co. to get you in ...

Jeesh.

91. Thanks, bliss_eternal
I work for a law firm, so I'm doing okay, or will be if I can get my debt situation under control. I think one more year ought to do it.

But I've worked for minimum wage (and less), and I know I've never completely lost the sense that I better not spend too much. Paradoxically, that's what got me into trouble with the credit cards -- not wanting to part with money I had.

But this is a discussion for another day.

72. So who really are the powerful ones?
The guys who can shut down the largest city in the world by refusing to report to work for a few days?

The people with the power to destroy and rebuild this country? You got it. Us. Not them Us. Just remember that next time you feel like you dont count. Dont believe it. You hold all the cards. All you need is organisation and youre second to none.

Poeple try and tell you that strikes are illegal, guess what some laws were meant to be broken.

We have the power, not the Bloombergs, or the Patakis.

Great Post!
