Poll question: Defending the rule of law is more important than politics (Agree or Dis?)
Defending the rule of law is more important than politics, and even if it means having some other right wing nut repubs take their places it's worth it if it means being able to hold them accountable to the law.

1. What's the point of having laws...?
...if the elected officials don't have to follow them? What kind of example does that set? Why not just have a dictatorship and dispose with the pretense?

2. Exactly!

If for the rulers there is no rule of law then the rulers will never lose an election or a legal decision, so politics wouldn't matter anymore and would just be for show.

3. Police States with Dictatorial Powers Aren't Stronger, They're Weaker
If only we knew what the Leader knows then we'd how how wise it is that their actions be kept secret.

Nonsense!

The secrets such leaders keep are secrets about how incompetent and criminal they are.

And the more able they are to keep their incompetence and criminality secret the more incompetent and criminal they become.

Such regimes are not strong.

They are not resilient.

They do not last a thousand years.

They have no future.

Were the Nazis really strong and efficient, or were they hopelessly compromised by their own incompetence?

Did the Soviet police state really make them strong, or did it make them a joke that collapsed under the weight of their own corruption?

Did their crimes against humanity keep them in power, or was that part of the reason they were driven from power?

So for those who say they don't mind having a police state with dictatorial powers, as long as it keeps us safe, ask them

"Why do you want us to be so weak?"

4. I would add that while individual dictatorships et al don't last...

...they can become systemic, leading to a series of totalitarians that would be forgettable were not for the atrocities they inflict on their own populace. To maintain power, a dictator must control the options of those they seek to dominate. Since it is logistically impossible to control all options available to a populace, it is important to control that populace's PERCEIVED options, as those are equally effective and far easier to institute.

Total control of the media, constant and pervasive fear, limited education and poverty are all means by which such a "leader" can control a population's perceived options. If only I could come up with a real world example...

5. Without The Rule Of Law We Have Nothing
Edited on Fri Dec-23-05 11:15 AM by ThomWV
We might just as well crawl back into the prehistoric ooze from which we came.

My dogs have no law other than me. Without me they are free to tear at each other's flesh until only one rules over all the others who remain alive. Bush would have that be the model for our society and I will not allow him to do it.
