Senbrenner rejects Senate Patriot deal
RAW STORY
Without debate today, the House acted to extend controversial provisions in the USA PATRIOT ACT to February 3, 2006--five months short of the deadline approved by the Senate.
Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee Frank James Sensenbrenner (R - WI) had rejected the deal reached by the Senate.
House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi did not oppose the one-month extension, stressing the fact that "ninety percent" of the law would be unaffected by the move. She also issued a statement announcing that she would have preferred a six- or three-month extension to the single month proposed by Sensenbrenner.
The House and Senate must now reach an agreement about the amount of time before the the provisions expire.

WASHINGTON Dec 22, 2005 — The House passed a one-month extension of the Patriot Act on Thursday and sent it to the Senate for final action as Congress scrambled to prevent expiration of anti-terror law enforcement provisions on Dec. 31.
Approval came on a voice vote in a nearly empty chamber after Rep. James Sensenbrenner, R-Wis., chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, refused to agree to a six-month extension the Senate had cleared several hours earlier.
It was not clear when the Senate would act on the one-month bill, but approval was possible by evening.
"We're happy to agree to a shorter term extension of the Patriot Act. The important thing is to strike the right balance between liberty and security," said Rebecca Kirszner, an aide to Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev.
