1. 2 - I don't think it is their intention but...
by demanding that your religion is the only truth you set yourself above all others. When people feel they are more valuable then others only trouble can come from that.
Religious text contain lots of leeway for the use of violence. They were written when the world was very barbaric.

2. Some sects each violence, some don't.

There is no "intrisic" propery when to comes to something that is completely dependant on interpretation.

If you believe for example that the Bible is literally inerant and verablly inspired, then you have a bible that teaches violence and love at the same time (yeah, I know - it is self-referentially incoherant). But if you beleive that the Bible is not literally inerrant nor verbally inspired, which many other do, then violence is not "intrinsic" to anything.

4. Modern Islam is violent because it has been, ironically...
...hijacked by radical factions. The Islam that I know and have read in the Koran is no more violent than what is in the Bible, and in my opinion, is LESS violent that the Bible. Islam has been controlled by violent groups whose leaders are in absolute control of how the Koran and the word of Islam is interpreted- in other words, the poor, the uneducated are being brainwashed by the few in power.
The Koran says in battle that one must not damage women, children, unarmed soldiers, trees, buildings, among others. Jihad is NOT external, it is an INTERNAL battle. However, those in control of the message have brainwashed hte masses to believe otherwise, IMO.
I am not an expert of Islam, but I have read the Koran to the extent that I know Islam, at it's core, is not a religion of violence. Sadly, it has been manipulated, like all religions, to fit the agendas of the few in power.

5. If the question was asked of Judiasm or the Church
would alarm bells be going off for the suggestion that it preached hate?

11. I dare anyone to make this poll using Judaism or Christianity

Go ahead playas - do it and let's see how long it stays up.

And don't stop at this board, you go to whatever US board you want to and do it, then come back here and post the URLS so we can watch em disappear faster than you can post em.

16. Cool! I should clarify that I am an unrepentant free speech extremist

If I had a board, you could post anything you wanted on it as long as it wasn't an ad for genital enlargement pills, printer supplies, or rl contact info of a private individual.

It does not matter what I think of your opinion, in my opinion, you have the right to express it.

6. Other
I think their are more choices. I think most, if not all, religions teach peace. However, people don't always teach peace, no matter what their religion

7. Where's the real choice
Religious sects that teach hate and violence are not REALLY following their religions teachings!!!

That's my vote...

8. the only violence
permitted in Isalm is if it is an act of self defence. Islam--the word means surrender to god --and is part of the word salam--or peace. The message of the prophet as manifest in the Qu'ran was essentially a message of peace. The Qu'ran specifically condemns the initaition of agression and warfare must be quickly resolved to bring peace.

What the prophet himself taught and what diverse sects do are two different matters.
Any different from what Christ taught and what churches do today?

insanity. Keep thine religion (or spirituality) to thine self. Amen, shalom, Salam melekum, namaste and so forth.

15. It's not worse than any other religion
All religions have their fundies.

Here's some I can think of:

Islam: Osama Bin Laden is a crazy fundie. Farrakhan is fucked up too.

Christianity: Falwell. This guy thinks that the teletubbies are gay. He's a fuckin weirdo.

Judaism: Irv Rubin. Well, Judaism had him, before he offed himself in prison.

Keep in mind, these people are not true representatives of their faith. Bin Laden distorts the Koran to serve his purposes, Falwell distorts the bible to serve his purpose, and Rubin was just an idiot.

I don't think it's such a good idea to vote on bigoted generalizations about various religions.

18. Religion is terrorism
Its political control by terroristic threat of eternal toruture.

Just because the threat is a con doesnt make it any less of an act of terrorism.

19. I posted this poll because...
I don't know why this post was deleted before, But I'll try again.

I'm annoyed that there is a conventional wisdom that dems/liberals= allies of Islam.

I don't consider myself an ally of Islam or any religion. They have caused more suffering than they've eased.

I wondered what others here think.

I think that the US needs to have an even-handed approach to Israel and the Muslims, as Dean has suggested. Neither side is right. They need to get together and work their s**t out like the Irish and the British, IMHO
