The Army has a command dedicated entirely to training and educating soldiers in ever-changing strategies. The U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command in Fort Monroe, Va., operates 33 schools and centers at 16 Army installations.
And in recent years, Kleisner said, he's also seen more cooperation between the Army and communities.
"Five years ago, you never would have seen this," he said of Ewe-topia. "You wouldn't have seen it not just because the local community wasn't into the United States Army, but the United States Army didn't see the necessity to get outside into the complexities that exist out here."
Today, more outside training opportunities are being seized - something always true of the military's special operations units, but now being adopted by mainstream units, Kleisner said.
Kleisner gestured to the soldiers milling around in the snow after learning how to move sheep and ducks. "It all adds up at the end of the day," he said. "It was all about killing people years ago.
"Now ... our mission is to support the Iraqi people's attempt to set up a decent armed forces and establish an inclusive democratic state. That has nothing to do with killing everything you see, which is a black-and-white situation the Army is very comfortable dealing with. > >
