I wrote to the local paper today after seeing the first two letters here:
http://www.mariettatimes.com/letters/story/let21_1223200580600.aspMy response -- hope it's published!:
Two letters published on Friday, December 23 warrant a reply. In the
first letter, yet another pair of citizens complain that Christmas is
under attack from non-Christians and secularists. The letter writers
freely acknowledge that 85% of Americans are Christian. Since so many
Americans are Christians, and since the letter writers fail to provide
a single specific example of anyone "attacking" Christmas, it should
be easy for Times readers to see the "War on Christmas" myth for what
it is: an attempt by pastor Jerry Falwell and his radical buddies to
scare up some donations.
If there is such a thing as an attack on Christmas, the following
letter is a fine example of it. There, the letter writer expresses
indignation that those who benefit from the Salvation Army's charity
do not help them collect donations. More than any secularist
strawman, this slander of those who need our help at this time of year
exemplifies an unloving attitude that is completely contrary to the
Christmas spirit. Whatever holidays they celebrate, people should
spend less time watching Fox News and reading Thomas Sowell and more
time working to ease the struggles of their fellow men, women, and
children.
