Smoking!! Ex-Powell Aide says Powell the "only sane" person in W's admin
http://nytimes.com/2005/12/24/politics/24wilkerson.html?hp

from the article:The speaker is Lawrence Wilkerson, former chief of staff for Colin Powell.

"What I saw was a cabal between the vice president of the United States, Richard Cheney, and the secretary of defense, Donald Rumsfeld, on critical issues that made decisions that the bureaucracy did not know were being made," Mr. Wilkerson said in a well-publicized speech at the New America Foundation in October. "And you've got a president who is not versed in international relations and not too much interested in them either," he added in the speech.

It was an embittering experience for everyone at the State Department, Mr. Wilkerson says, to be saddled with presenting what turned out to be false information at the United Nations, and also to have been sidelined in the running of postwar Iraq by the Pentagon. "When I rationalize for myself not resigning, I did it by saying, 'This is the only sane member of this administration,' " Mr. Wilkerson said of Mr. Powell.

Wasn't he somehow involved with a snafu in Vietnam?

30. Yes, he was an official apologist for My Lai
As a young officer, he was sent out onto TV shows to stand up for Lt. Calley's little massacre, and he did it with all the rectitude of the "decent" military man. He knew he was whitewashing war crimes, and he did it with all the clear-eyed rectitude he could.

He sold his soul for advancement long ago, and he's a fool. The man is also simply not that smart.

...Desert Storm Syndrome, and all other high profile issues. His job was to minimize the damage or try to hide it.

4. Well, that's not saying a lot for Powell.
There's "certifiable" and then there's "totally over the edge".

We're talking theme and variation, not black and white.

8. does anyone remember the interview with him when after being asked a tough
question, the people filming him tried to cut it off and pretend their were technical difficulties so he wouldn't have to answer the question and he angrily defied them and asked them to continue shooting so he could answer the question? There was an online clip of it somewhere. Whether he is the most sane, hard to say. Whether he has a conscious eating at him, clearly he has.

Because that trashes his credibility and makes him look like he just worships his boss, who by the way, was responsible for covering up the May Lai massacre.

22. On a positive note...Colin Powell on spying program:
http://thinkprogress.org/2005/12/21/colin-powell-criticizes-spying-program/

“My own judgment is that — it didn’t seem to me, anyway, that it would have been that hard to go and get the warrants . And even in the case of an emergency, you go and do it . The law provides for that. And three days later, you let the court know what you have done, and deal with it that way.” From an interview with George Stephanopoulos featured on ABC’s “Nightline.” December 21, 2005 12:33 am | Comment (42)

23. ...the bestiality that comes over men when they're asked to use force...
Please, God, may be all come to understand what Mr. Wilkson understands:

Army discipline is something Mr. Wilkerson says he has understood since Vietnam, where he flew helicopters starting in 1969. "I've been there," he said. "I've stood on the hot parade ground as a pilot. I've cursed generals." He added, "I understood the bestiality that comes over men when they're asked to use force for the state."

He recalled that a battalion commander once declared an area a free-fire zone, "which means that anything that moves, you shoot it." One of his gunners killed a 13-year-old girl, Mr. Wilkerson says, adding, "I will always live with that for the rest of my life."

Veterans are not heroes - what does "Thank you for your service" mean? - thank you for behaving like a beast when asked to use force for the state?

I understand that many join the military for all the right reasons and that that impulse should be respected and so should returning vets whoever they are, whatever they have done.

I will respect, but will not honor veterans.

27. There might have been a small chance for Powell to turn out well
but that was lost with his rotten son working in the government at the same time. Any move Powell might have made had to be considered in the light of what his actions might do to his son't career.
The above gives Powell the benefit of the doubt but I wanted to throw it out there.

28. But he was still a deliberate liar in the service of murderous greed
This man was no hero; this man threw away his reputation sanctifying the acts of some of the most wicked and grotesque liars and thieves to ever have power in this country. Did he think they'd let him ascend to power after being a good servant? Did he think he'd get to drink from the font of plenty if he enabled them? Did he really secretly hate the inferiors of the world and buy into the extreme selfishness of Republican privilege?

He knowingly lied to bring his country into war against a sovereign nation; this man is a despicable asshole and history will echo disgust of him. His public career is over now, and his only hope for redemption is blowing the whistle on these fiends. Being such a good little soldierbot, though, he won't.

Of what good is he to the human race?

you're bound to get shit all over yourself.

Sorry, but Powell chose to dance the demon waltz for greedy, self-centered reasons. I think he should have come forward with the truth instead of being a so-called "team player".

I don't wish any ill towards him, but I really have no sympathy for his big mistake.
