Let's coin a term (ala "security moms") but for Civil Liberties
Edited on Sat Dec-24-05 10:21 AM by iconoclastNYC
If we had fair elections I think we'd see that a large percentage of the Republican base has abandoned them over the Bush's administrations Executive power grab. Every true (paleo)conservative I know Is much more afraid of the government then they are of "Islamofascist" terror attacks.

The Democrats should really make civil liberties a big part of it's appeal to independent and paleoconservatives voters and split the party. It's a great wedge issue. Remember we don't need to peel off a very big part of the Republican coalition to severely cripple them.

SO HERE'S THE CHALLENGE FOR ALL YOU DU WORDSMITHS:

Coin a phrase to describe the block of voters who might vote for Democrats to preserve checks and balances....the bill of rights.....restrain executive power....etc.

15. There is usually a list of the most popular names for babies. Has
anyone looked to see how George has fared the past 5 years? I know Tonya fell off the charts after the Nancy Kerrigan business and never came back.

4. Liberty Moms
Keeps it simple, and since the words rhyme, it's clear what we're responding to without actually naming their meme.

5. Thing I wonder about "Security Moms"
Was this a real, measurable phenomenon, where females who would have tended to vote dem actually switched their support to Bush in 2004 on the grounds that the big strong Chimp would protect their chil-ren? Or was it a marketing term the right came up with: create a fictional groundswell of supporters and use it as a ploy for snagging votes from that particular demographic?

I would assume it was the latter, since the term "security mom" has such an advertisey feel to it, like a peanut butter commercial.

"Privacy Dads" might be the closest equivalent. It might also have the advantage of being true, considering how many republican-voting males are livid with rage over Bush's illegal Big Brother shenanigans. This group probably feels particularly betrayed by the domestic spying scandal, since so many of them vote Republican largely on the grounds of favoring minimal government intrusion on personal freedom and privacy. Sure, they've clung to this idea in the face of increasing evidence to the contrary, but the spying-on-citizens-without-a-warrant thing is too hard to explain away, for all but the most determinedly self-deceptive.

7. i think it was made up
and distributed to the press by the gop. Security moms, voting for bush to protect their children? I certainly didn't see any evidence of such a groundswell in my travels. I agree with you that it's most likely a PR invention.

8. I agree. They had fictional voting blocks -- in fact
Edited on Sat Dec-24-05 12:34 PM by sfexpat2000
they had to concoct a whole tale about who voted and why.

I never saw a "Security Mon for Bush" sticker, did you?

That is a great name for a "code pink" type group. It brings in our southern sisters too. That should scare the pants off them! If southern women began to vote together, we could turn this whole thing around pretty darn fast, I think.

19. It could work for lots of things
For those women who don't want government making abortion decisions for their sisters, or medical end of life decisions for their parents, or have their kid busted for marijuana, lots of things. If done with a tight focus to southern women, it could be very very effective. Someone needs to send the idea to Molly Ivins and Ann Richards.

11. You have to use some of "their" buzzwords to make it work, imo.
Edited on Sat Dec-24-05 01:01 PM by hiaasenrocks
They love the word "traditional," and have pretty effectively co-opted it and redefined it to mean "conservative."

I'd suggest something like: "Traditional Rights Moms"

And they love to rant and rave about how their side loves the Constitution and Democrats wipe our asses with it.

So maybe: "Constitution Moms"

I don't know. Just thinking out loud here.

EDIT: On a related note, I'm starting to think that the packaging of this issue (for our side) should include something about how this is yet another battle in the long-term fight for Civil Rights. This nation has fought these battles over rights for women, blacks, etc., and now this, the latest battle, is over everyone's Civil Rights as put forth in the Constitution.

17. Note....it doesn't have to me MOMs or WOMEN either
There are also office park dads...I don't think we need to replace "Security Moms" with another mom word. The best thing would be something that ends in Republican.

Someone suggested *4th Amendment Republicans*.

18. Probably end up with the militia
That's the problem with some of this, the ones that this would appeal to are militia types who would never vote Democratic anyway. It's a good idea regardless, it might draw some nonvoters. But I wouldn't count on any of the right wing freedom types voting Democratic. The most you could hope is that they vote Constitution Party.

And I do like Liberty Belles.

22. "Rule of Law" Republicans
Edited on Sat Dec-24-05 06:19 PM by iconoclastNYC
I think that's a good one.

We can tie it into the Culture of Corruption (Delay, Abramoff, Ney, Cunningham, Scanlon, et al) and Bush's unconstitutional executive power grab.

Oh....and the idea is that these people vote Democratic or stay home because the Republican party deserted them.

In 2008 they'll be ___candidate's name___ Republicans.
