If ONE Senator can pass legislation then WHY - oh WHY….
Edited on Sat Dec-24-05 03:27 PM by LunaC
If the one-month extension of the Patriot Act was passed with only ONE Senator present, why can’t WE push through Dem legislature the same way?

Specifically, Conyer’s legislation establishing a select committee with subpoena authority to investigate the misconduct of the Bush Administration with regard to the Iraq war detailed in his report to the Committee on the Judiciary on possible impeachable offenses (House Resolution 635).

1. your CNN link isn't working
and the only thing I remember is that there was some sort of unanimous agreement to allow this

But it seemed so sneaky - who "unanimously" agreed?

3. The ENTIRE body of ONE that was present........
to vote. Therefore, ALL present agreed to pass the vote.

5. So why can't we do it too?
Why can't Conyers sneak back in and vote all by himself to pass HR 635?

4. Yep, John Warner out of Va!
I heard this yesterday on the WJ on cspan. Brian Lamb read the article on his show. He said cspan received the tape late in the day and it showed Warner asking if there were any objections. When there were none, he banged the gavel and declared motion passed. He said the cspan tape showed that there was NO ONE else in the chanber at the time!!! Brian even made fun of Warner asking if there were objections.

I don't how this works, but apparently it does under some rule of the Senate. I though they need a quorum, but Brian's guest at the time said even though it's common in cases like this to have at least 2 other people in the Chamber, usually the leaders of the both parties, they probably could do it without anyone too!

Sometimes I think I'm finding out way more than I wanted to know about how our Gov't works. I was a much happier and content person before I heard all this crap!

7. I saw the tape C-Span played
and was blown away that ONE guy alone could do this especially since the whole Congressional body had approved a six- month extension only hours earlier!

So.....why can't WE use the same tactic? Wait until everybody leaves and then have ONE Dem push through OUR legislation?

What am I missing?

6. I saw that. I thought it was pretty creepy.
But your point is well taken. Dems with a conscience MUST do something to return sanity and the Constitution to this country.

8. He was talking to himself
and voted to approve legislation! This is not only creepy and sneaky, it seems like yet another abuse of power.

Why can't the one-person-legislation door swing both ways?
