Youth find more truth in Eminem than Bush
Youth find more truth in Eminem than Bush

Gary Younge in New York
Friday July 18, 2003
The Guardian

Americans don't care what Europe thinks of them and believe their children find more truth in Eminem's lyrics than the speeches of George Bush.
Those are the conclusions of an online poll of more than 1,000 people that reveals an insular, parochial nation which is growing ever more cynical about its own legislators and opinion-formers.

Remarkably, 53% agreed that "America's youth find more 'truth' in Eminem's lyrics than in President Bush's speeches', according to the survey conducted by the New York advertising agency Euro RSCG.
Mr Bush has traditionally scored well on trust but recent polls show that his credibility has been diminished by the failure to find weapons of mass destruction and false statements made in his state of the union speech about Iraq's attempts to procure nuclear weapons material from Niger.

"I think Eminem speaks of the street while the idea that politicians are people you can always trust gets weaker and weaker," says Marian Salzman, chief strategy officer at Euro RSCG. "People think you just have to keep asking questions and they don't always believe the answers." It is not clear where they hope to get the answers from, however, as the media does not have the people's trust either.

2. What do you mean youth?
I'm no spring chicken, but even I find more truth in Eminem's lyrics than I do in Bush.

Now Bush vs. Vanilla Ice or Milli Vanilli... THAT would be a contest.

4. Blame it On The Rain vs Blame It On Clinton
On one hand you have a group of guys who never actually recorded an album then on the other you have a guy who was never actually elected President.

Fun times.

5. We bought Eminem's Eminem Show cd
Even though some of it is rather offensive, all of it is art and a lot of it is truth. I think that "Lose Yourself" is a very powerful song. There are a couple with more political ramifications like "White America" and "Square Dance" which are great.

6. well, well
i dont know, i find eminem uninteresting, self-centered, bigotted and violent, i think social commentary can be done effectively without any of these things. I think he would be as violent and lousy a president as bush is so i would prefer a third option please

7. Don't like Eminem too much
I listened to his music but haven't heard anything that I would consider bigotted.

8. Well, I consider myself a feminist
And some of it is offensive to me on those grounds. We originally bought it for "Lose Yourself" which although self centered, provides an intense portrait of a poor person rising uneasily to success. I was originally shocked and offended by some of the anti female lyrics. Then it dawned on me that these songs are art, meant to portray feelings and ideas that aren't necessarily literal. I think that being somewhat offensive gets people's attention better than the president or any of our presidential candidated speaking on network news. He says things that no one else will say in ways that really bring the point home. I am not saying that he is the greatest man on Earth or anything. His album, Eminem Show, is rather impressive and powerful. Find someone who has it, borrow it, and listen to it all the way through with an open mind. Maybe, we'll still differ on this but maybe you'll understand a little bit of what I am talking about.
