Sputtering trucks lead state to lift fuel rule
Mike Meyers, Star Tribune
December 24, 2005

Minnesota truckers, some of whom have complained that their vehicles sputtered and stalled when using biodiesel in cold weather, will get a 21-day reprieve from the state law requiring them to use the fuel.

State officials, responding to complaints from truckers, decided Friday to give public and private researchers until Jan. 13 to investigate potential problems with the fuel.

But officials said they're confident that biodiesel -- which, unlike ethanol blends that are derived from corn, is blended with a 2 percent solution of a soybean byproduct -- won't be labeled a poor alternative to conventional diesel.

The state started requiring biodiesel sales in September.
