Great. My sister's fiance is a Bushite.
He loves the tax cuts :wtf: However, we weren't able to get to into too much detail because my parents insist on shutting down any discussion that involves politics... because they're "moderates" :eyes: Yet, they get all pissy when my brother and I rip into the Bush Crime Family. Today we were going off on Condi Rice (there's a softball/ass kiss article from AP in today's newspaper) and my step-dad gets all pissed off at us.... I suppose it's because he's moderate... gee, why do I keep forgetting that? Naughty me :spank:

Family gatherings, what a pain in the ass.

4. Never got a chance to ask...
but I would think if he made the kind of money that the tax cuts actually effect, he'll be using it to pay for his heating bills.

5. This reminds me...
of a time when we visited some of our relatives at a cookout, and the eldest got up to lead the prayer before dinner. He started to praise George H. Bush and asked that God help the American people choose the right president.

Clinton came in after that.

6. Family Peace
Your stepdad is probably aware that family fights are far more long-lasting when families are scattered. You don't patch things up with people you don't see. So . . . the rules are different.

For that reason, I generally support a no politics rule at family get-togethers. I know who the family Democrats are, and we talk politics among ourselves. I also know who the Republicans are, and the ones who will quote Rush Limbaugh with approval. The less said the better.

7. Bush cut tax collections
It is spending that taxes us. It is spending that creates the need for tax collections. Bush raised our taxes with his spending, although he did reduce and defer tax collections through a vehicle known as debt.

My vocabulary says that Bush raised our taxes considerably, lowered collections, and skyrocketed debt.

11. maybe the moderates are mad
because you bring up a taboo subject - politics.
Would it be the same if Kerry was president and the paper did a softball piece on his SoS and right wing family members were ripping on him/her?

Everybody love tax cuts. What bothers me is that Republicans do targeted tax cuts - targeted at the rich and non-working. A nickel for me, and $80,000 for a CEO. Sure, the rich pay most of the income taxes, blah, blah, blah. But check this out - suppose the standard deduction was increased by $5000. This would be a tax cut about the same size for every tax payer. In fact, it would not cut taxes for the rich at all, because they are itemizing their deductions. It would reduce paperwork too because more Americans would find that it is not worth the trouble to itemize. Tax cuts do not have to be targeted towards the rich and non-working.

27. Okay, I won't be snarky
I understand, really. I am extremely moderate for this forum myself. One of my high horses is trying to get people to understand that "redneck" to me, is a racial slur. I haven't sold everyone on that concept however!

No, I don't think you will be "tombstoned" for daring to point out that tolerance is a good thing.

But where you are going to hear a LOT of static is in tolerating intolerance, which so many right wingers exhibit. It is a conundrum, really.

If you hang out long enough here you will really learn a lot. Most of it very good, some of it disappointing and some of it, now and then, downright terrifying.

Aside from their political views, we do in fact tolerate them.

17. I have more advice!
Aren't you LUCKY!?

If it looks like you are going to have to deal with this guy for a long time, you might want to learn my technique. It has worked for me every time and I have not only kept the peace, but actually won a few converts. I almost hate to share it.
oFirst you just listen. Anytime you listen to someone carefully they start thinking YOU are a genius. Be very non commital..ask questions: "Well, Bubba, how do you feel about...." and don't give your opinion. If you are asked directly just say it is something you are going to think about and look into. If he pushes you just say things like "you never know, Bubba, you could very well be right." Then change the subject. And the next time you get together with him you start in very carefully with one FACT per discussion. "Well, I did some research, Bubba, and I found that the statistics are such and such." But don't be led into other tangents. If you can't get out of the conversation, keep asking questions and keep listening but don't give your opinion. I have found when I have done this before I know it I am getting an email that is actually supporting something I said. See, it is a human need for approval. If you don't argue with him, he will seek your approval and it might just get him to thinking. Yes, it is manipulation. But it works.

Or just thumb your nose at him and tell your sister he's a loser and to dump him.

20. I do an exercise in my college math class
where we compute the tax for 2003 and then for 2004. I don't remember all the numbers but we used a taxable amount of the vicinity of $30,000 and the tax cut amounted to about $7.50. My students were shocked to find out that they could buy a fancy cup of coffee and that's about it.

Now if your future brother-in-law makes a lot more money, maybe his tax cut was more substantial. :eyes:

25. The thing about the taxcuts that made them meaningless is
health insurance went up. I am actually bringing home LESS now than I did when Clinton was in office, but my salary is a little bit higher.
