Canada blames U.S. for gun violence- (CNN Propaganda included)
Edited on Wed Dec-28-05 02:35 AM by podnoi
(This is posted to expose media bias. Not discuss the merits of Gun control, ok :)

from http://www.cnn.com/2005/WORLD/americas/12/27/canada.crime.ap/index.html

Interesting example of Propaganda in a CNN article today. Canada is quite frustrated with dealing with Guns flowing across the border and contributing to their violent crime rate.

Notice the paragraph below that occurs about 2/3 down the page. I just had a feeling about this and researched this person. He is no "security expert"! And the "Mackenzie Institute" is just a right wing blog. And CNN uses this as a source of "professional expertise"?!

"John Thompson, a security analyst with the Toronto-based Mackenzie Institute, says the number of guns smuggled from the United States is a problem, but that Canada has a gang problem -- not a gun problem -- and that Canada should stop pointing the finger at the United States."

Some real unbiased "professional" work right? How about this from his archives:

(About Peace Marches):

"Yesterday, in the streets of cities across the World, tens of thousands of moral cripples and the usual Marxist ingrates were on display. "

from: http://www.mackenzieinstitute.com/2004/terror030504.htm

Yes, just the kind of professional institute that will provide unbiased and critical reporting..... Amazing what goes on in our media these days. Let CNN know this is unnacceptable!!!

1. Confused...
If Mackenzie is a right wing blog then why are they anti-gun?

3. His "talking point" seem to be "guns don't kill , People kill people"
Edited on Wed Dec-28-05 02:38 AM by podnoi
Which is a right wing/gun lobby Meme. Couched in language made to make the reader believe he is not actually making the talking point he proceeds onto in the 2cd half of the sentence.

2. The last paragraph you posted looks similar to this older one.
Apparently from the Canadian Press, October 31, via http://www.buckeyefirearms.org/article2786.html:

John Thompson, a security analyst with the Toronto-based Mackenzie Institute, agreed that Americans are doing a lot to combat gun-running. But he said Canada has a gang problem, not a gun problem, and needed to stop pointing the finger at Americans.

Curious.

8. Canada has a gang problem, not a gun problem
Yeah, except the gangs are using guns. This isn't the 50s, where gangs meet in the park for rumbles, armed with only switchblades and baseball bats.

4. WTF? Is this standard?
"Please note that (for obvious reasons) the Institute reveals neither its funding sources, nor the identity of its board."

6. What surprises me is how obvious this one is...
Edited on Wed Dec-28-05 02:37 AM by podnoi
I mean, they have so much confidence the public will not check the facts they don't even bother to find a more "official looking" front organization. Either that or they (CNN) are just lazier than heck? Or stupid? Just Amazing.

7. Don't know nothing about this organization. I'll take your word that
it is some NRA cell. The papers tomorrow will tell us more no doubt. (I mean the Canadian papers).
