Chipping away at democracy
December 28, 2005
AS IS TYPICAL the GOP has taken an open-and-shut case against President Bush and twisted it into an argument the party can win. Bush's approval of warrantless wiretaps on US citizens is not a debate on whether to investigate terrorists (i.e., 9/11); it is about surveillance of US citizens (even those guilty of no crime) without any oversight.
The courts have readily approved surveillance requests and can do so without delay (even after surveillance is started).
Clearly, Bush's end-run around the court has nothing to do with the ability to investigate terrorists, but is another attempt to eliminate oversight of the executive branch. Are Americans entitled to the protections of the law? Is the president above the law? Are we a democracy or a monarchy? These are the issues at stake.
