Commerce Secretary Evans's curious reaction to Mahathir's words
snip..........

Then there's Commerce Secretary Donald L. Evans's curious reaction to Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad's historical reflections on how "Jews rule the world by proxy."

Evans, appearing on CNN on Sunday, saw a tape of the prime minister's remarks. "Well, look," he told CNN's Wolf Blitzer, "I don't know all of the details behind it." But, Evans said, he had traveled all over the world, including to Iraq and Afghanistan.

"Everybody in the world wants the same thing," Evans said. "We all want to put a roof over our family's head. We all want to feed our children." And he figured Bush, on his Asia trip "will, no doubt, say to that, you know, in the world, we all want the same thing. We all want to live in a world of peace and freedom and prosperity."

The Jews were stunned. Holocaust survivor Rep. Tom Lantos (D-Calif.), in a letter yesterday to Evans, called that response "truly hallucinatory."

more....................

1. As a Jew, I was stunned by Evans' evident common sense
Apparently others would not like to live in a world of peace and freedom and prosperity. Perhaps they are happier in a world where missiles rain down on helpless civilians, so long as no Jews are not the victims. But I see focusing on the things that bring us together as humans is a positive move. And whenever I hear Tom Lantos' name, I spit.

7. OK - you're the saint and I'm the sinner
Since you criticized someone who criticized someone who criticized someone for NOT criticizing someone who dared to discuss what looks to me like the real situation in the world, namely Israel and the US versus all Muslims everywhere, YOU have no doubt prevented a future Holocaust.
Bravo !

But seriously, since when is it the job of minor functionaries in the US government to weigh in on pronouncements by the leaders of other countries ? Does this make any sense at all ? Or is it just infuriating when ANYONE refuses to sound the alarm: Anti-Semite at large ?

8. It's quite simple
I watched the interview. I criticized Don Evans. Don Evans, a Government official, was asked specifically about the Administration's response to Mahathir's statement, which clearly anyone can regard as at best a generalization, and at worst, a clear example of Anti-Semitism.

Don Evan's reply was evasive and irrelevant to the question. He may as well have answered "No Comment". You're right, it is not his job as a minor functionary to do so, but it shows a certain level of class and humanity.

To reply as he did, I found to be quite insulting.

9. No comment - I like it !
I'd like to see this type of hands-off attitude to much more on the part of the US government (including of course the situation in Israel and Palestine). But with former employees of the Jewish Telegraph Agency such as Wolf Blitzer being able to put government employees on the spot whenever they like, there's probably no chance.

And I think you should recognize that Lantos etc. are definitely NOT going to be satisfied with a simple no comment.

5. Why write a check?
The Jews control the banks anyway... right?

3. I was stunned.
This was an insult, and has nothing to do with Sharon.

How the hell do you answer an ethnic slur by saying "We all want the same things?"

What a jackass.

10. you are right but
mygod...how much has been said by people who care about israel trying to STOP those encouraging the vicious bullies like ariel (and i say that knowing Sharon has the holocaust in back of his mind: the holocaust still is no justification for israel to have, for 30 plus years, allied itself with Argentina/SA death squads and S Africa nuke bomb program)
nations don't have friend, they have interests: Israel's interest was always to remain a beacon of liberal toleration in mad brutish world etc....but her actions (becoming like the european fascists who created auswitz etc) have driven the Palestinians crazy (and me too!)

6. The Administration's Defense of God's Own General
The administration's defense of God's Own General makes it a little tough for them to criticize other countries, even another national leader like the cranky, senile Mahathir, for making similarly insipid, bigoted comments.

All the Cabinet is on a short White House leash.
