In December 1999, the Vermont Supreme Court ruled that Vermont was "constitutionally required to extend to same-sex couples the common benefits and protections that flow from marriage under Vermont law." The court instructed the legislature to grant gays "inclusion within the marriage laws themselves or a parallel 'domestic partnership' or some equivalent statutory alternative."

Given that choice, Dean took the more conservative option. According to the Associated Press, Vermont's lieutenant governor and House speaker supported gay marriage, but Dean didn't. Gay marriage "makes me uncomfortable, the same as anybody else," Dean said at the time. He did encourage the legislature to pass a civil unions bill. But the alternative he averted was legalizing gay marriage, not preventing gay domestic partnerships.

Many supporters of the bill criticized Dean for signing it "in the closet," in private and without a ceremony.

That action has prompted a few reporters to ask Dean about his support for such a law at the national level. His answer has been virtually the same in all cases -- he is opposed. Why would he oppose a national law that he felt justified in endorsing for his state? Because he apparently believes that the federal government has no right to intervene in state decision-making.

so it's not really possible to do a comprehensive comparsion at this time.

The Clark people indicated once they were on speaking terms with their webmasters again they would get that info posted lickety-split

I don't think standup comedy is going to work out for you.

I'm talking about addressing them in general, though it'd sure be nice if they were listed on the website (in a form other than speech transcripts or summaries).

1) On their tax plans, Clark advocates for a repeal of only that portion of Bush's tax cut on the wealthiest 2%, or those making $200,000 per year or more. This creates a higher effective marginal rate on the rich while keeping marginal rates on the middle-class and the poor lower. In contrast, Dean would repeal ALL of Bush's tax cut, effectively raising taxes on the middle-class and the poor.

2) On the military budget, Clark has expressed willingness to cut up to 25% of it (mostly from the Air Force), in addition to shifting budget priorities. Dean has indicated he is only willing to shift budget priorities.

In both of these instances, Clark is taking the more liberal position.

I am not aware of any other significant differences in their positions as expressed to date.

Two left, one of them being foreign policy, the other healthcare. He is actually fairly detailed, unlike a certain other 'experienced politician' has been.

Also, today talked about closing loopholes, ending corporate welfare.
Also, I think Clark intends to work WITH the congress.
