Veteran Activist or Government Liar, Who is the Patriot?
By Thomas D. Segel
October 20, 2003

...snip....

Few would argue against the military family vote being a major factor in the Republican victory, particularly in the final hours of the Florida recount.snip.....

vast majority of these men and women no longer support the false promise administration of George W. Bush. What is even more disheartening, they have little respect for either of the major political parties and complete distain for all who are responsible for the governmental trail of broken promises.

snip.....

"While we were serving in the military, we were expected to have honesty and integrity and took an oath to uphold the Constitution of the United States. Our government held us accountable. Today we expect the same honesty and integrity from them that they expected from us. It is not being returned." Chief Master Sergeant Buck Yeager, a 21-year Air Force veteran from Helensdale, California writes on the Internet, "the biggest government lie and broken promise is lifetime medical and hospital care was promised but never lived up to." Dixie Mock is the widow of an "Atomic Veteran". She says they all "served proudly and secretly and they are certainly paying the price with their suffering, from both the pain and the rejection by the government. The veteran's families are forced to watch and see the pain in their faces when they continue to get rejections of their claims. How can the government officials responsible for these lies, cover-ups and denials sleep at night?"

...snip....

There were even harsher words, such as those of Lonnie Vessell, a Navy retiree from Crystal City, Missouri. "It is not so much the false promises I am concerned about, but the scam that our government is running when we send perfectly healthy young men and women to the middle east and have them come back damn near vegetables due to biological or chemical warfare being used...then say it is not our responsibility to care for them and their families. Look how long it took them to admit to Agent Orange and we still don't know the end result of Gulf Wars I and II. This crap has got to stop."

...snip...

Secretary of Defense doesn't want to pay them until they are actually on foreign soil. "What kind of a government is this? What have they become? How did we get fooled into voting for these people? I think we, the American people, need to call for a full investigation of how our men and women in uniform are being treated and what kind of support system is in place to help their families while they are away."...snip...."And we can't forget the promises that claimed, nothing would be denied our service personnel", says Army wife Helen Moore of Las Vegas, Nevada. "Yet many of them were sent into Iraq without the newest and best of protective body armor. Reports abound that family members are buying these improved armaments for their loved ones on the open market from private funds." ..snip.... President Bush tricked all veterans into voting for him with slogans like ' A Promise Made Is a Promise Kept'. He now threatens to veto bills, which would make some of those promises reality."

...snip...

They sponsor and co-sponsor nice sounding legislation and then make sure it never reaches the floor for a vote. The next thing they do is write you a letter and blame everything on the opposing party. What a sorry bunch we have in Washington....snip.....

God and the soldier we all adore
In time of trouble, not before.
The troubles over, all things righted,
God is forgotten, and the soldier slighted.

1. Realithy is the GOP has
betrayed the Vets, but they are not ready to admit to it.

After all the Democrats tried, in vain, to get things for the service

And Clinton did raise the salary of the Armed Forces, which Bush
tried to reverse

13. Clinton also opened the VA....
to many more vets than previous administrations.

To me, it makes little difference if a vet served in peace or war, as far as the VA goes. Those that served in peacetime, we always waiting for a war that could have come at any time. Sometimes, it is just timing.

It is also important to remember that a few things on the docket for the military were put on indefinite hold once the 'gingrich devolution' came into power. the GOP run House was so anti-Clinton, that they slowed down or halted virtually everything Clinton proposed.

4. Interesting that these men are out of service and no officers
I guess if you are in you can not say a thing and it would be interesting the mind set of the officer. I say this as he was the one that used to have to sign your voting card, if you voted and less of them but usually they have more formal education, and means congress hears him better. When my husband went in medical after you got out was on the base of if (if) they could but most felt it was a done deal. The man did not look at that well enough. They mis-read. I do not know how it is now.

Why are so many Americans so STUPID ? You get the Government you deserve. OK, a second thought. NOT STUPID, just willing to accept the word of the office of the President without looking at facts. So I'll just change my comments to "JUST LAZY" What do we think here at DU ? What do you think ? How do you see it ?

9. I disagree

I think it's a fascinating article. The author is still mostly controlled GOP programming, but one of his eyes opened just a little. There is hope.

12. This is a report on a REPUBL:ICAN meeting
where THE REPIBLICAN MILITARY FAMILIES openly trash the pResident, his administration, and the pentagon.. They also admit that they had a "lot to do with" getting * into office and now regret it..

We can all expect Salon.com to say and report about stuff like this, but this is a scathing reprisal of * & friends, and it WILL find its way to more soldiers and their families..

The "worms" are turning...

Articles like this give us hope that people (ALL people) will see through this sham of a leadership team..

14. I agree...
I've seen and heard a lot of RWer's spitting on bush & Co.

This is about the center point in the crumbling of the bush admin in the GOP. They are reaching critical mass.

11. About time people in the military wake up and grow up
They have been near-delusional with their Rah, Rah...USA dominance, testosterone garbage for fifty+ years. Maybe they will begin to realize that bombing for your freedom, patriotism via aggression and strutting and flag-waving is just a con game.

Yep, that's for sure, and I'll be there right with them, (something we and the GOP can agree on, bush is a bad president). It's about time these pinheads started listening to what we've been saying all along!
