The Selective Service System wants to hear from men and women in the community who might be willing to serve as members of a local draft board.

Local Board Members are uncompensated volunteers who play an important community role closely connected with our Nation's defense. If a military draft becomes necessary, approximately 2,000 Local and Appeal Boards throughout America would decide which young men, who submit a claim, receive deferments, postponements or exemptions from military service, based on Federal guidelines.

Consideringg the neocon agenda of perpetual war, it's more of a matter of WHEN......and They seem to be ramping up the program for that moment in time.

They started doing this early in 2002..

who care nothing for the people who join the military, have darned near ruined the military we have. Not that I'm big on invasions, etc, but the National Guard has been quite handy in helping with natural disasters, etc. And I'd think we'd want to have a healthy Guard and Reserve to deal with any potential homeland security threats (all Asscroft wants to do is to harrass enviornmentalists and Muslims and find out what we're all reading at the library). From what I've been hearing from the local Guardsmen and their families, their patience with this administration is wearing thin. If the idiots in the White House do start up the draft again (and this time drafting women as well as men), you can be assured there will be a groundswell of opposition to BushCo.

If Bush steals another term there will be a great gnarling and gnashing of teeth!

We're not going to reimplement a draft. There is no need for it at all. The disadvantages of using compulsion to bring into the armed forces the men and women needed are notable. The disadvantages to the individuals so brought in are notable. If you think back to when we had the draft, people were brought in; they were paid some fraction of what they could make in the civilian manpower market because they were without choices. Big categories were exempted -- people that were in college, people that were teaching, people that were married. It varied from time to time, but there were all kinds of exemptions. And what was left was sucked into the intake, trained for a period of months, and then went out, adding no value, no advantage, really, to the United States armed services over any sustained period of time, because the churning that took place, it took enormous amount of effort in terms of training, and then they were gone....
