We have to make our own paper trail, if our 'leaders' don't care about our right to vote.

I agree! Now, how does this get out to every dem who will vote? The media sure as hell won't help spread the word.

I don't know about other states, but in IL you have to sign an affidavit saying you will not be in your place of residence, or that there will be some other reason (surgery, hospitalization, disability, etc.) that you cannot physically present yourself at your regular polling place. I can't imagine that absentee rules elsewhere are tremendously different.

in fact we have the highest absentee rate in the nation something like 80% of all voters vote by mail.

at your regular polling place you can vote absentee. Good reason to get out there and volunteer!!

IF you can vote absentee and otherwise would have to use touch screens without a voter-verified paper ballot, then by all means do so.

Just be aware that optical scan counting programs can be hacked and that it will take a lot of people power to mandate recounts and pay for them. We have to LOOK at the paper ballots, too.

Check your state laws and make sure you can get a recount any time you want if you pay for it. Thanks to medling by The Election Center who has help states "craft" election law, in some states even IF you have a paper ballot, you're not allowed to use it.

We can vote absentee for any or no reason at all, just personal preference.

Ohio is another state (and likely a pivotal state in 2004) where you need a reason to vote absentee.

In Ohio you may vote absentee ballot if…

You will be absent from the County on Election Day
You are 62 years of age or older
You are a full-time firefighter, peace officer or provider of
emergency medical services
You or a family member will be hospitalized on Election Day
You have a physical illness or personal disability
You cannot vote on Election Day because of a religious belief
You will be in jail for a misdemeanor or awaiting trial
You are an election official or board of elections employee
You are on active duty in the state with an organized militia

It is a good idea in states where you have a choice.

I have never heard of anyone who has had an absentee request denied, but the lawyer in me, can't recommend lying to the Board of Elections.

A larger concern is trying to convince the casual voter to vote this way. I voted absentee during college and it involved calling the Board, receiving the official request and returning it, and receiving and returning your ballot on a timeline. I'm afraid that people who rarely vote or only vote during the presidential election will say 'hell with it' somewhere through the process.

Besides, even if you keep a copy of your absentee ballot, there is no way to prove it arrived on time. Unfortunately, an absentee ballot can be tossed away as easily as an electronic vote can be deleted. (I don't think the Board allows registered letters.)

In Calif. anyone can be a permanent absentee voter for any reason. I should know, I've been voting absentee for many years now. You need only come up with a stamp to do it every time.

For 2004,I'll be voting absentee.

In Pennsylvania, you can only do it if you are going to be absent from the municipality in which you are registered to vote, or if you have a physical limitation which prohibits you getting to the polling place.
