Poll question: Who thinks Al Sharpton should run for Congress?

1. Sharpton is
an activist and could not do so effectively pinned down in congress, now he can go anywhere necessary.

18. he's running for president right now
and he has no chance whatsoever of winning, which I assume he's well aware of. He could very well win a congressional seat in New York.

3. Ask New Yorkers.
Sharpton is a New Yorker, so one might presume he would run for a New York congressional district. New Yorkers might be less inclined to vote for him.

8. Congressional districts always open up.
U.S. Congressmen serve only two-year terms.

Off the top of my head -- most of Harlem is represented by Jerrold Nadler, who is one of my all-time faves. I hope Nadler's in Congress forever. Sharpton is an old Brooklyn boy and might look toward a district there.

However, be advised that New Yorkers KNOW Sharpton real well, and for the most part aren't exactly in love with him. I know he's charming and witty and has had some great moments in the debate, but he also has a very ugly past. I don't think he could win an election in New York. He might have to go to another state.

12. Rangel may retire
So, that seat may open up but I think it will likely go to a Latino.

I believe he has been mentioned as a candidate against Edolphus Towns because Towns has upset some democrats. He turned down the offer but could still run. Towns could retire soon anyway. Major Owens may also retire in the near future and Gregory Meeks has been mentioned as a potential candidate for mayor. Other than those districts, I doubt that he could win anywhere else because the other districts don't have a high enough black population.

22. Sharpton has changed so much
from the Tawana Brawley hoax. I was living in NYC at the time and had nothing but contempt for Sharpton in those days.

Now I like what I see. I believe every man is redeemable and I bet the average New Yorker does too.

6. Congress would be a good start for Al
always been wary of any candidate shooting for a high office (such as Governor or President) who has never never held elected office before. At least Ventura was a mayor first.

21. There you go -- that's the best idea.
I doubt very much that the Rev. Al WANTS to be POTUS,or even a legislator. What he's good at is being a speaker and a provocateur. I think he's a natural for television and radio, and that's where he might do the most good. It would be a waste to stick him in a conference room and make him write legislation.

That's unlikely. He also has high negatives. But an appointed position would work. Press Secretary looks good.

11. I don't like him
Just from watching the local news, he has been quite annoying and I really don't trust him. He seems to cause more problems than he solves and I feel that his rhetoric is a little over the top. However, he has improved over time and is better than he once was.

I do not care for Sharpton. His anti-Semitic epithets, his association with violent thugs, his shady background, the Tawana Brawley affair, etc. should bar him from office. The party certainly doesn't benefit from having such a slimy, divisive figure representing us on TV for all of Middle America to see.

17. Sharpton has run for office several times
He ran for the NY State Senate in 1978, for the US Senate in 1992 and 1994, and NYC Mayor in 1997. Apperently New York voters a not as impressed with Mr. Sharpton as you are.
