Gephardt tries to attack Dean; attacks himself in the process
Gephardt Faults Dean About Medicare

By RACHEL L. SWARNS
Published: October 29, 2003

DES MOINES, Oct. 28 — Representative Richard A. Gephardt, Democrat of Missouri, used a speech on Medicare on Tuesday to mount one of his sharpest attacks on Howard Dean, the former governor of Vermont, saying there was "very little difference" between Dr. Dean and President Bush on Medicare spending.

"The fact is we need a Democratic nominee who is clearly different from George Bush," Mr. Gephardt told a group of the elderly here. "But on all these Medicare issues, there is very little difference between George Bush and Howard Dean. They both support cutting Medicare. They support turning it into managed care. They think recipients should pay more for services.

<snip>

"This is preposterous," the campaign manager, Joe Trippi, said in a statement as he changed the subject to Iraq. "While Governor Dean was standing up to President Bush's pre-emptive war in Iraq, Dick Gephardt was standing with him and supporting him every step of the way."

16. Yep... Joe Trippi simply changed the subject
but I guess that was his best defense of Dean's abominable Medicare position.

3. Which reminds me
One of the funniest cartoon-ballooned photos during the run up to the war that I saw was of Bush, Lott, Daschle and Gephardt in the Oval office having a nice little meeting. The Bush caption said "Hey guys, I have a great idea! Lets start a war in Iraq!" Cheney chimes in with "Big time!", Daschle says "can we go to lunch first?" and Gephardt is just grinning at the ceiling, saying "Whatever".

Priceless.

And look how accurate it was, all this time later. Life imitating art.

4. Gep Is Talking About Medicare
Edited on Tue Oct-28-03 11:55 PM by cryingshame
Why the heck is Trippi bringing up Dean's NON VOTE on the Iraq Resolution?

When you can't argue with facts... change the subject....

Post Script:

But thanks for pointing out how Dean's only real hook for Progressives is his opportunistic CLAIM that he would have voted no on the Iraq Resolution...

Cause without that, he's got very little else.

8. Gep Was Talking ABOUT MEDICARE
Read the CONTEXT again.

And lets see... Dean thought Saddam had WMD and that we only needed to wait 60 days before bombing...

12. lol
sorry, I just find it funny that you are talking about how important context is and then paraphrase a Dean comment which has been taken out of context.

7. "we need a Democratic nominee who is clearly different from George Bush"
"we need a Democratic nominee who is clearly different from George Bush"

Gep was the one who raised the "clearly different" from Bush issue. I am assuming Gep is referring to this "clear difference" of which he was an integral part:

President, House Leadership Agree on Iraq Resolution

President George W. Bush along with bipartisan leaders from the House and Senate announced the Joint Resolution to authorize the use of the United States Armed Forces against Iraq. "The statement of support from the Congress will show to friend and enemy alike the resolve of the United States," President Bush said during the announcement in the Rose Garden, Wednesday, October 2, 2002. 9. And The CONTEXT WAS MEDICARE
And the difference between Gep and Dean's stance on the Iraqi Resolution is only that Dean had the luxury to CLAIM he wouldn't have voted for it.

14. But Gep voted for the war, and he continues to support the occupation
Gep remains unrepentant, plus he was a total fuckup as Dem leader in the House.

15. Ummm, They Picked Up Seats....
And Gep has been fighting the good fight for years.

But apparently it suits your purpose to LIE and say that he's the same as Junior.

And Gep is definately NOT in favor of occupying Iraq.

6. Dean is Bush Lite.
Gephardt has been on the front lines of the Democratic Party for longer than most of Dean's supporters have been out of diapers.

13. Yep, I see Gep right out in front
in that Rose Garden shot.

And enough with the nonsense about Dean supporters being "kids." You are obviously just confused by our youthful enthusiasm!
