Democrat Clark blames President Bush for Sept. 11 intelligence failures

NEDRA PICKLER, Associated Press Writer

Tuesday, October 28, 2003 (10-28) 16:52 PST

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Democrat Wesley Clark on Tuesday blamed President Bush for the intelligence failures that contributed to the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

"There is no way this administration can walk away from its responsibility for 9-11," Clark told a conference, titled "New American Strategies for Security and Peace." "You can't blame something like this on lower level intelligence officers, however badly they communicated memos with each other. ... The buck rests with the commander in chief, right on George W. Bush's desk."

Later Tuesday, Clark called on Bush to release the details of an intelligence briefing he received from CIA Director George Tenet in August 2001.

(snip)

The Bush-Cheney campaign declined to respond to Clark's criticism, referring calls to the Republican National Committee. Christine Iverson, spokeswoman for the RNC, said Clark "sounds exactly like Bob Graham, the failed presidential candidate from Florida who launched similar attacks against the president a few month ago, and was forced to drop out of the race because his message of protest and pessimism failed to resonate with the American people.

With regard to the last paragraph: ha ha ha! Yes! A hit, most palpable.

1. Graham was right and so is Clark!
"(Graham) was forced to drop out of the race because his message of protest and pessimism failed to resonate with the American people."

Baloney.

34. So true!
Graham dropped out because that was the ONLY thing giving him traction, not because it failed to resonate. If nothing else, Graham's little charge across the horizon has made people pay MORE attention to the intell failures under BUSH than they did before.

3. Praise Clark for something he said...good idea.
Little Rock, Arkansas on May 11, 2001, General Clark declared:
'And I'm very glad we've got the great team in office, men like Colin
Powell, Don Rumsfeld, Dick Cheney, Condoleezza Rice... people I know
very well - our president George W. Bush. We need them there.'"
Clark praises United States President George W. Bush with these words: "President George Bush had the courage and the vision... and we will always be grateful to President George Bush for that tremendous leadership and statesmanship."

"Do you ever ask why it is that these people in these other countries
can't solve their own problems without the United States sending its
troops over there? And do you ever ask why it is the Europeans, the
people that make the Mercedes and the BMW's that got so much money can't put some of that money in their own defense programs and they need us to do their defense for them?
"And I'll tell you what I've learned from Europe is that are a lot of
people out in the world who really, really love and admire the United
States. Don't you ever believe it when you hear foreign leaders making
nasty comments about us. That's them playing to their domestic politics as they misread it. Because when you talk to the people out there, they love us. They love our values. They love what we stand for in the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution and the Bill of Rights."

I can forgive you for being woefully ignorant of the fact that we've beaten that horse to death already.

And now that you have been informed the horse is dead, and the rest of us find the whole horse beating thing tiresome -- you will stop, now, won't you? There's a lad.

15. Hillary Clinton praised Bush...
The senator praised Bush, saying he was "fulfilling an important role in emphasizing the threat and danger posed by hostile regimes that have malicious intentions toward the United States, Israel and the entire world."

Why do people keep lying about Clark. I think
I will write a book and title it "Lies...and
the Lying Liars Who Tell Them".

When you say, "Clark is a Bush Fan" -- that is
a lie. Clark never was a Bush fan. Quit lying.

22. Why do I have to keep posting this damm speech ? Sharpton said it best ,
Stop writing and start reading the speech...... reading....http://www.opinionjournal.com/extra/?id=110004065

Also that was George Bush I, in context to 1st Gulf war.....

Why the Hacks?????

here is the full paragraph of contention:
------------------
You see, in the Cold War we were defensive. We were trying to protect our country from communism. Well guess what, it's over. Communism lost. Now we've got to go out there and finish the job and help people live the way they want to live. We've got to let them be all they can be. They want what we have. We've got some challenges ahead in that kind of strategy. We're going to be active, we're going to be forward engaged. But if you look around the world, there's a lot of work to be done. And I'm very glad we've got the great team in office: men like Colin Powell, Don Rumsfeld, Dick Cheney, Condolzeezza Rice, Paul O'Neill--people I know very well--our president, George W. Bush. We need them there, because we've got some tough challenges ahead in Europe.
----------------------
notice he says he is glad to have them in office for the challenges ahead in EUROPE!

24. ALL OF YOU!!! STOP THAT!
Talk about solipsism! Get off EdgarFriendly's back, please - how do you know he isn't a genuinely new poster? It's crass to spit fire on newbies, hell it's probably against some DU rule.

And talk about Pavlovian reactions! Just the name Clark automatically brings in the usual suspects, I see.

This wasn't supposed to be another thread about Clarkies defending the indefensible (like his comments praising Bush - and no it's not relevant that Hillary did the same, she was wrong too).

However, this wasn't supposed to be a Clark-bashing thread, even if it is from me.

This was barely supposed to be about Clark at all.

It's about the 9/11 coverup, folks.

Clark has done something very good today - he has raised the 9/11 issue loud and clear. For this, he deserves praise.

Now where do the other candidates stand on this most central of all the Bush lies? I know Dean supports disclosure as a good thing, but he has not been loud enough on this issue.

I hope Clark goes further on this. I hope they all do.

31. Well, I hope it'll open some minds
Lots of us who support Clark are at least as far to the left as those who support Dean. We don't just look at the medals as we've been accused countless times. We look at a liberal with medals, brilliant intellect and a resume that makes Bush's look even worse than it actually is, which isn't an easy feat.

39. Clark kicks Bush's ass..
Wes Clark: White House Stonewalling 9/11 Commission

General Wesley Clark called on the Bush Administration to stop stonewalling the September 11 Commission.

"George W. Bush and his administration have stonewalled the 9/11 Commission long enough," Clark said. "Leadership means being straight with the American people. For the sake of our nation's future security, President Bush needs to give Governor Kean and the other Commission members the information they want, need and have demanded about the August 2001 briefings."

Former Gov. Thomas Kean of New Jersey, a Republican, is leading a commission to investigate the circumstances surrounding the September 11, terrorist attacks, including the government's intelligence and its ability to handle the attack. The commission is charged with making recommendations to prevent future attacks. Kean has threatened to subpoena classified White House intelligence from the month before the attacks.

The commission wants to know what information the Bush administration had about al-Qaeda prior to the attacks, and when it had it. The White House is holding back some documents it needs to complete its investigation.

"Leadership is about making the right choices to make American secure," Clark said. "Under George W. Bush, the American people have suffered from a leadership gap."
