either hold an essay contest or do a membership drive, combining them seems a bit sneaky. "HA! We don't care about your essay, give us more NAMES! MORE NAMES!"

3. A contestant could write an essay even if they didn't support Gore...

We want to block that sort of contestant.
We want to make sure the prize goes to an actual active supporter, not some Republican teenager who's a good writer and wants to undermine the purpose of contest.

I mean, would you give a grand to: "Gorr is good for fun. Send money plz."

That's two for "sneaky," show of hands?

7. Part of your objection was that only a supporter could write the winning..

essay.

However, I objected to the content of your illustrative hypothetical non-essay winner insofar as it solicited donations.

I really want to be clear that Gore ABC is about getting things done and THAT is why we are requiring the signing up of ten people for the contest.
