Support Bush* Shop at the Gap
A full year before the general election, several fashion names are helping Bush* reach his fund-raising goal of $200 million. Robert Gray, chairman of St. John Knits, has writen a check for $500, while Donald Fisher, chairman of The Gap Inc. and his wife, Doris, have each given $2000 to Bush's* unopposed primary race. (Also donating $1,000 or more to Bush* are Karen Hoguet, Federated Department Stores' chief financial officer, and Kosta Kartsotis, president and CEO of Fossil Inc.) On the Democratic side, support has been split between the many contenders. Oscar de la Renta gave $1,000 and Diane von Furstenberg gave $2,000 to Dick Gephardt's campaign, while Senator John Kerry received donations of $2,000 each from Revlon chairman Jack Stahl and Price-Costco chairman Jeffrey Brotman. Leonard Lauder, chairman of Estee Lauder, gave $1,000 to Howard Dean, $2,000 to Gephardt and $1,000 to Kerry. (Think he's a good dem? I do) Kenneth Cole supported Connecticut Senator Joseph Lieberman's bid with a $1,000 check. And when Wesley Clark entered the race in September, he drew support from designers James Purcell, who in addition to a pledge of around $1,000, offered some fashion advice. "I just need to get him to wear some French cuffs and skinny ties," Purcell said.
Point is the Gap chairman, Donald Fisher, has a right to his political beliefs but we have a right to disagree and boycott the stores. I think I'll shop the Estee Lauder counter next time I'm looking for a lipstick instead of Laura Mercier.

2. Thanks for letting me know about the GAP!
This disgusts me. Then again they're preppy, white jock mentality is just like that of the Bush* administration. This should come as no surprise.

Once the Democrats have a single candidate, these same folks will give that person money. Unless they're in an industry that directly profits from a Repug in office (oil, defense). Dems will get money from trial lawyers, media, and entertainment.

14. Well I work for a Federated Department Store
Edited on Fri Oct-31-03 01:30 AM by jiacinto
And by encouraging people to boycott their stores--Bloomingdale's, Macy's, Burdines, Rich's, Lazarus and others--you are going to hurt people like me: hourly sales associates.

Many of us need those jobs. If you do boycott Federated you are going to be helping many people who need those sale associate positions lose their jobs.

Houget isn't going to suffer from your boycott. It's average people like me who stand up for hours on end helping customers. We are the ones who suffer the most when budget cuts take place.

And let me add that Federated is nothing like Wal-Mart in its practices. The company treats its associates very well and fairly.

15. Jiacinto you are right! I don't live near a Federated store.
I liked the Estee Lauder donation. I was mad about Gap because they know their target market, gear their commercials accordingly and then give to the otherside. What gives?
I wish you well.

16. Yeah I know
But as I said the CEO is not goint to suffer the consequence of the boycotts.

I do not shop at Wal-Mart myself because of their policies and how they treat their employees. However, not every other retail chain is like Wal-Mart.

19.  Boycotting the Gap is a worthwhile endeavour
merely because of their shoddy, cheap-ass overpriced, sweatshop-produced, fall-apart clothing. The fact that the chairman supports the odious chimp just cements it further.
