Laura Bush --- A Fashion Disaster
Edited on Sun Aug-17-03 11:05 AM by arwalden
One can only assume that her polyester pant suits and clogs/sandals come to her by way of the bargain rack at Dress Barn and Lane Bryant.

Has anyone ever bothered to tell her that there's more to fashion than ILL FITTING pastel and turquoise seersucker pantsuits?

And not that there's anything WRONG with off-the-rack clothes... you'd just imagine that as long as she's occupying the White House she would try to do a better job and try to look a little more impressive.

6. You guys are off base. Way off base.
You should be ashamed of yourselves, picking on a woman who is so unfortunate to be married to that creep, GWB. I think it is sad when we pick on the families of political figures. If Laura were coming out and saying things publicly regarding politics, she would be fair game. But the poor thing doesn't say much, doesn't do much, and shouldn't be the focus of our ire.
Now, her mother-in-law, that is another matter altogether. That Beeyatch wouldn't know a decent getup if it flew off a truck and landed on her back.
I really think the dowager queen buys her clothes at Wal-Mart. And I think she got her political attitudes there, too.

she knows well that shrub rose to power on inherited blood money from Auschitz....that shrub's policies have KILLED thousands, and deprived people of even a minimally decent life...

yet, she does nothing...she simply benefits from this criminal enterprise, BFEE....there is NO EXCUSE for laura to watch the KILLING from her prime perch at the White House...and say nothing...

laura is very much a part of the destruction of America....

BTW....she should hire someone to help her with her clothes, and sue the surgeon who did that failed eye lift...laura looks and acts like trailer trash from tex-ass, destroying everything good in America...

26. Actually - when she publically took the "cause" of women
repressed by the Taliban (very valid cause) - and then dropped it, or never applied it anywhere else (because there are a heck of a lot of women living under extreme repression, AND in post Taliban Afghanistan many women are living under very similar circumstances - the old police of public vice and virture are back for example...)

She took an active and willing role (to sell to the nation). And then never said another word? The press touted her as the "conscience" of the White House. She was the nurturing mother to us all making us feel better... (blah, blah, blah). And thus took an active role in the MadisonAvenue MarketandManipulate WhiteHouse.

if it had been sincere or not staged - she would still be speaking out - ala "there is still work to be done..." But nothing. nada.

She chose to play the role - and thus made herself part of the public image. (and thus fair game for criticism - granted her clothes is a bit petty - but funny nonetheless - who clothes this woman?)

73. The PR line is that Laura Bush is apolitical. The practice is...
...that she's a fundraiser. Normally I would take up the cry of "Poor Laura," but there are too many examples of her taking exactly the role that supposedly isn't hers.

For starters, there's the story that she's a librarian and teacher and Very Devoted to Education. However, she got out of teaching and librarianship upon her marriage and set off to...campaign with her husrband (who lost that election, by the way). Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but she never went back to her former career.

And if she's so influential, why won't Bush recommend the appropriate level of funding for education, including for special needs children? What about this attempt to alter Head Start? What about the Bush administration's proposed cuts to libraries and elimination of funding for Reading Is Fundamental?

Either Laura Bush has no influence on her husband, policy-wise, or she's a less benign influence than we've been led to believe.

She's very much a fundraiser for her husband. I'm hearing that she's off raising sums for the Chimpified One.

At any rate, the conflict between image and reality fits in very well with the Bush White House. GWB struts around in a flight suit, but you can bet he didn't go to Vietnam. John McCain did, and Bush's campaign against him was vicious. Max Cleland did, and an even more vicious campaign helped him lose his Senate seat.

But I digress.

Anyway, Laura Bush is a cipher, personality-wise, but she's hardly the apolitical innocent everyone has been lead to believe.

10. She Dresses Like The Wife Of A Used Car Salesman...
... I expect more from her considering her position.

Granted she doesn't DESERVE to be in her position, but you'd think that SOMEONE on her staff would be honest enough to let her know that ordering clothes from catalogs is not necessary anymore.

Retro is fine... but at least make sure your clothes STILL FIT before you dig them out of mothballs and try to parade around in them while pretending that you're setting new fashion trends.

101. well...
it's not as though George wears clothes that are fitting of the office. His jackets are bland bland bland, poorly tailored, with shoulders and sleaves 3 sizes too big. For every too small outfit she wears, he wears at least 3 that are too big. The easiest way to beat the Bushes is to hire a real fashion consultant that knows what they're doing.

108. Never, ever denigrate the wives of used car salesmen
I've been dealing with used car salesmen's wives quite a bit lately; all of the ones I've encountered dress attractively and professionally as befits someone who works in an office.

Laura Bush dresses like my mom, lover of polyester pantsuits for at least 40 years. My mom was a librarian too. (She's now a retired librarian doin' the Great Grandmother thing and feeling pretty damn good about herself.)

112. My Apologies... Nothing Personal...
But in consideration of the slicked-down, over-cologned "Leisure Suit Larry" stereotype that many folks associate with used car salesman... it only seems natural and logical to extend that tactless image to their wives as well.

Intrinsically, there's nothing "wrong" with Laura's outfits... IF (a big fat "IF") she worked in an office, or if she worked retail, or as a librarian...

But she doesn't. She's supposed to be acting as though she's the first lady of the United States. Clearly nobody in her inner circle cares or has the fortitude to bluntly tell her that she TRULY needs to make friends with someone like Oscar De La Renta.

56. Thanks, Sheepy. I feel the same way.
Get off it, everybody. It's shallow as hell to go on and on about what a person is wearing. Stop sucking up and internalizing all the advertising crap that is spewed at you every day.

If your clothes are clean and allow you to go about your daily business, then they have served their purpose. The Dalai Lama owns one or two patched robes, and he manages to be a pretty decent and influential guy. Will you go on and on about how badly dressed he is?

59. Apologists Unite!
Sorry, dear.

I believe I would agree with you 100% if someone were poking fun at and ridiculing the clothes of the manager at your local K-Mart.

Your comparison to Dali Lama doesn't work for me because indeed HE IS dressing appropriately. (Couldn't you just see him in a Liberace cape? No? Me neither.)

Could you see Laura wearing a feed sack? As long as it's clean... what difference does it make? Eh?

Seriously... notwithstanding the tragic circumstances that put her in her current position, she has the responsibility to represent our country in a manner that's more appropriate.

We are only saying OUT LOUD what the rest of the world is thinking quitely to themselves. Don't be afraid to admit that she's challenged.

It's such an embarrassment.

Remember Jackie Kennedy? Remember Nancy Reagan? --- Hell's bells... even Mamie was a fashion-plate compared to this train wreck.

She needs an intervention... not excuses. ;-)

79. But remember, the rightwingers spent hours yapping about
what Hillary was wearing (those pantsuits!), what Chelsea looked like (a dog!), ad nauseam. It was sickening then, and it's sickening here and now. I'd be the last to be an 'apologist' for Laura Bush, since I know absolutely nothing about her and truly couldn't care less about her, one way or the other. My focus is on the pettiness, the high-school-girls-tittering-in-the-bathroom nature of this sort of discussion.

Laura Bush must have been offered plenty of sartorial help over the years, and has obviously rejected it all. So what???

61. The Dalai Lama's pretty fly for a holy guy
I think that his robes and other garb are pretty cool-looking - I know that I would certainly choose them over a business suit, any day of the week.

I'm first in line to agree that clothes don't make the (wo)man - for the record, today I'm wearing a bathing suit and a Bruce Lee T-shirt. But we are talking about some fairly heinous visual atrocities being perpetrated by the unFirst lady, whose role in the current junta does, indeed, appear to be symbolic. She's been relegated to an accessory - a big departure from what we had eight years of - and for whatever reason (love, weakness, whatever) she's not obviously balked at the role. So could they at least please get the colors down and maybe the fit right, and maybe try out some of her predecessor's duds?

Pickles wears stuff that even I would characterize as a tad dowdy, and I've got as much fashion sense as a man wearing a Bruce Lee T-shirt might be expected to possess....and I really think she could look quite the foxy mamacita if outfitted a little differently.

Not that this is keeping me up at nights. Much.

are they going off message with designer clothing. They will do absolutely nothing that will arouse any envy. I think her clothing looks like the the clothing in the Blair ads in Parade magazine right down to the flip flops but I think that they have a just plain folks just like you and me image and she chooses her clothing to fit that role. * suits are custom made and cost thousands of dollars but there is rarely if ever anything reported about his clothing. As far as her not being fair game never forget that she is a driving force behind whatever he does in an emotional sense. Toxic energy seeks toxic energy. She read him the riot act in 2000 when he was campaigning and went off message and made a mistake. People tend to marry people that they are "familar" with on some level and the people he is familar with are not exactly the Waltons.

and, yes, she wears things that don't exactly flatter her (or anyone), but it's the colors that are most violently 'off.' Half the time she looks like guacamole and the rest of the time she looks like....I don't know....Andy Warhol's nightmare, or something.

I didn't even know that the institutional colors that used to be standard in hospitals and military installations, as well as in some of the more austere Federal facilities, were ever intended for use on clothing. It's been a revelation.

Edited on Sun Aug-17-03 01:35 PM by noiretblu
but would have opted for a zipper in the front instead of those buttons. and she should have something around her neck. yep...classic styles and colors, with interesting jewelry would be best for a woman like her, who really isn't into dressing.
that's how i do it :D

And not looking bad, considering that she has little concern with clothes and has put up with that man all these years. GWB is a lot of wear and tear on a woman.

be pretty if she had not gotten the bad facelift and if she dressed nicer. I think there's too many woman of her age and older that get facelifts and look worse for it instead of better. There are a lot of beautiful naturally aged woman out there.

Why do many wives of Greedy Old Prikkks dress like Mary Kay/Amway pimps? In fact, I have seen pimps in Snoop Dog videos in the same colors. Whoodathunkit? The

24. Dude, she soooo needs a makeover.
I hate being catty about people who make a lack of fashion a choice. It's a right we have as private citizens.

But she's a public figure and in a position such as hers the American public has expectations that she will, at the very least, put her best foot forward. She doesn't.

She needs to call those good folks at Nordstroms and have them retailor her pant suits as a minimum. She could do worse than to cultivate a relationship with an American designer, or even an American pret a porter house.

40. she uses Babs designer
so what do we expect? Babs was the worst dressed first lady ever. Those knee length skirts were bad for Babs, as they are bad for Laura. Laura has no sense of color - and far often she's jammed into something that doesn't fit right.

However, my biggest complaint with her concerns her taste in formal wear. We should not have a fashion disaster at state dinners. Remember that maudeawful gold number with the turquoise sash?

It's true. Mother in law has loaned Laura her designer Scaasi. And she also gets some things (like the inaugural gown) from a Texas designer.

She's just frumpy.

104. The dress itself isn't terrible
She just should have gone with the dress as either all magenta (might be striking with black accessories,) or all red. It would have been quite nice in black.

I think she looks fine in the periwinkle dress above.

Whomever is giving her fashion advice must not like her. If she's confused about formal attire, perhaps she should do what women have done since time immemorial: One can't go wrong with a little black dress, pearls, black hose and stiletto heels. Ever.

Carson of "Queer Eye For The Straight Guy" would have an aneurism if he saw the magenta/red dress, though.

But there's another one where the bow is dropped about four inches from the waist, and thus right over her belly. I think it might have been maroon or plum colored.

Of course the classic is the suit she met when she went to meet First Lady Hillary for tea in the White House. Gad, it was turquoise plaid. Gruesome!
